Gophers Tally Fifteen Hits in 16-7 Victory Over South Dakota State

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team returned home for a mid-week matchup against South Dakota State University tonight, tallying 15 hits as a team to take down the Jackrabbits 16-7 at Siebert Field.
Logan Winkelman picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota, tossing two shutout innings without giving up a hit and striking out five. Adam Urban also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits and tallying two strikeouts.
Charlie Sutherland went 3-for-5 in addition to his five RBIs for the Golden Gophers. Davis Hamilton furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Ty Allen also contributed for Minnesota, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two walks and three RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers got on the board immediately to launch the afternoon, scoring two in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off the bat of Davis Hamilton and an RBI single from Charlie Sutherland.
The Gophers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 7-2. The Minnesota offense exploded for four runs, scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies from Weber Neels and Ty Allen and a two-run single up the middle from Sutherland, which cut the Jackrabbit lead to 7-6.
Minnesota held the Jackrabbits off the board before rallying to grab an 11-7 lead in the sixth. A pair of RBI singles from Neels and Jackson Akin added two to the total before Jack Mosh would draw a bases loaded walk. A sacrifice fly from Sam Hunt drove in one more run before the end of the frame.
Minnesota held the Jackrabbits without a run before their offense got back to their scoring ways in the seventh. Three runs on a pair of singles from Allen and Jack Mosh highlighted the inning, bringing the Minnesota advantage to 14-7.
The Gophers expanded their lead in the following inning, picking up two runs on a single from Sutherland before coasting to a 16-7 to end the night.
