Nabwe Nearly Breaks Collegiate Hammer Throw Record

The Gophers competed in numerous meets since Wednesday, including the Drake Relays.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Redshirt junior Anthonett Nabwe came just three centimeters short of the NCAA all-time record in the women's hammer throw at the Drake Relays on Friday. Prior to the Drake Relays Minnesota also hosted the Gary Wilson Invitational on April 22.

After a University of Minnesota track and field stadium facility record of 72.48m (237-9) at the Gary Wilson Invitational on Wednesday Nabwe launched a new lifetime best at the Drake Relays on Thursday. Nabwe's second-round toss of 77.64m (254-9) came just shy of Camryn Rogers' collegiate record of 77.67m (254-9) back in 2022. Nabwe's performance helped her finish as the runner-up in the professional field in Des Moines with only 2022 world champion Brooke Andersen's 78.56m (257-9) finishing ahead of Nabwe at Drake Stadium.

Nabwe, a 'The Bowerman' Watch List member, broke her own African and Big Ten records in the process on Thursday. Nabwe's throw ranks her inside the world's top 10 in 2026 and extends her NCAA lead.

Zion Campbell produced one of the best sprinting performances in University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium history on Wednesday. After a windy 100m prelim round where he dropped a 10.08, Campbell dropped a 10.00 in the final just hours later. The 4.4 meters-per-second wind reading will keep Campbell's time off official all-time lists. Later in the 200m Campbell clocked a lifetime best 20.49 (+1.6 m/s) to move to No. 4 all-time at Minnesota and became the fourth Gopher to go under 20.50 in the 200m since 2023. In the same 200m field first-year Gopher Jayden Green crossed the finish line in 20.65 (+1.6 m/s) to come in at No. 7 all-time at Minnesota.

In the men's long jump Hakeem Ford made his first appearance in the event in over two years and finished as the Gary Wilson Invitational runner-up. Ford's 7.63m (25-0 1/2) goes down as the sixth-best wind-legal jump in program history, tying him with Michael Buchanan. Ford, a triple jump Second Team All-American, is now 11th in the Big Ten this season in the long jump.

Jordan Dunigan broke into the program top 10 for the first time in his career at the Gary Wilson Invitational in the men's discus. Dunigan produced a 58.12m (190-9) to win the competition in Minneapolis and tied him with Chris Brinkworth (1995) for No. 8 all-time at the 'U'.

Next week Minnesota will have entries in three different meets including the St. Thomas Invitational (April 29), Hamline Invitational (May 1) and the Spec Towns & Torrin Lawrence Invitational (May 2).
