Mills, Opinion Reach U20 World Championship Finals

Mills competes on Thursday night in both the discus and shot put.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Both Able Mills and Precious Opinion reached the final in their respective events at the U20 World Championships in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field on Wednesday and Thursday. Mills reached the final of both the discus and the shot put while Opinion reached the triple jump final that will be contested on Friday.
Mills claimed both the Jamaican under-20 national titles in the shot put and discus back in June and brought that momentum to Eugene on Wednesday and Thursday. First with the discus, Mills launched a first-round 57.37m (188-3) and her mark held for seventh overall among the two qualification groups at a smokey Hayward Field. Then on Thursday morning Mills returned to the circle for shot put qualification where she came up clutch in round three with a 15.84m (52-0) to finish ninth out of the 12 qualifiers for Thursday night's final. Mills' discus final will be first at 8 p.m. CT on Peacock with the shot put final to follow with a start time set for 9:40 p.m. CT.
Also on Thursday was Opinion's qualification in the triple jump where the Nigerian used a second round lifetime best of 16.02m (52-7) to qualify for his first world final. For Opinion, the mark moves him from No. 9 at Minnesota all-time outdoors in the triple jump to No. 3, passing former Gopher Floyd Whitaker who finished fifth at the U20 World Championships in the same event back in 2022. Among the 12 finalists for Thursday's final Opinion's leap of 16.02m (52-7) was good enough for fourth overall and made him one of just three individuals to secure a personal best in the U20 World Championships triple jump qualification.
