Gophers Rally Falls Short in 8-6 Loss at No. 19 Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell in a back-and-forth battle to No. 19 Washington, 8-6, in the series opener Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium.

Sydney Schwartz (10-10) took the loss in the circle for Minnesota, allowing seven runs (four earned) over 3.1 innings. Macy Richardson provided relief, giving up one run across 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Minnesota tallied nine hits, highlighted by a two-hit, two-RBI performance from Cassie Johnson, including a home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Washington broke through first with a three-run home run in the third inning to take an early 3-0 lead.

Minnesota responded in the fourth, manufacturing two runs on a sacrifice fly from Scarlett Kuhn and an RBI groundout by Tara Wolocko to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Huskies answered with a four-run fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Minnesota errors to extend their lead to 7-2.

The Gophers continued to battle, as Johnson launched a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 7-4. Minnesota added two more in the sixth on an RBI double from Schwartz and an RBI single by Maggie Werner, trimming the deficit to 7-6.

Washington added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single, pushing the lead to 8-6.

Minnesota threatened in the seventh with a leadoff double from Johnson but was unable to bring the tying run across.
