12 Gophers have hit the diamond across the country for the summer ball season
MINNEAPOLIS – With the 2025 summer baseball season over halfway through, 12 Gopher baseball players have tallied time on the diamond for six different teams across the country.
Most Gophers can be found across the Northwoods League (6), with others seeing action in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (4), and the Cape Cod League (2).
Northwoods League (6)
Caden Capomaccio, Jr., RHP (Willmar Stingers) - Cappomacio made four appearances on the bump for the Gophers before missing the remainder of the season due to injury, where the reliever tallied five strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work. Coming off his injury, Cappomacio has made two appearances for the Stingers this summer, logging a 4.91 ERA with four strikeouts over 3.2 innings pitched.
Jonathan Dobis, Fr., RHP/OF (St. Cloud Rox) - Dobis made six appearances on the bump for the Gophers during his freshman season and collected four strikeouts over 8.2 IP. This summer, Dobis has made 10 appearances for the Rox and tallied 20 strikeouts.
Sam Hunt, R-Jr., C (Willmar Stingers) - Hunt made 12 starts over 19 total appearances for the Gophers throughout the 2025 season, tallying a .156 average and a .597 OPS over 32 total at bats. Hunt has been excelling from the plate this summer with the Willmar Stingers, slashing a .300 average and 1.023 OPS with six home runs. He also earned himself Northwoods League Player of the Night on June 30, with a two home run and five RBI performance over the Mankato MoonDogs.
Jameson Martin, Fr., INF (Willmar Stingers) - Martin recorded 37 starts in 42 appearances throughout his 2025 freshman campaign with the Gophers, slashing a .213 average with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. Martin has appeared in 38 games for Willmar this summer, leading the Stingers with 40 hits, 35 runs, and 32 RBIs while being tied for a team high eight home runs.
Luke Ryerse, Fr., RHP (Eau Claire Express) - Ryerse made five starts over 10 appearances for Minnesota throughout the 2025 season, recording 23 strikeouts over 21.2 innings of work as a freshman. Ryerse has made one start and two appearances on the bump this summer for the Express, tallying a 2.08 ERA and seven strikeouts over 7.0 IP.
Adam Urban, Fr., RHP (Willmar Stingers) - Rookie right hander Urban made 11 appearances out of the pen during the 2025 season for the Gophers, posting 14 strikeouts over 14.1 IP. Urban has made eight starts for the Stingers this summer, throwing 31.2 innings while collecting 27 strikeouts.
New England Collegiate Baseball League (4)
Jake Elbeery, R-Jr., INF (Upper Valley Nighthawks) - Elbeery made 27 starts over 30 appearances throughout his 2025 redshirt junior season with Minnesota. Over 93 at bats, he slashed a .269 average and .773 OPS with two home runs. Elbeery has made five appearances with the Nighthawks this offseason, tallying four hits and a .267 average over 15 at bats.
Tyler Hemmesch, So., RHP (Upper Valley Nighthawks) - Sophomore right-hander Hemmesch made three starts over 16 appearances for the Gophers in 2025, tallying a 3.86 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 32.2 total innings of work. Over three starts and five total appearances this summer, Hemmesch has logged 14 strikeouts over 12.0 innings pitched with the Nighthawks.
Easton Richter, Jr., INF/RHP (Bristol Blues) - Richter made 47 starts over 49 appearances with Minnesota throughout his 2025 junior season. He tallied .278 average and .895 OPS with 12 home runs. Over six games with the Bristol Blues this summer, Richter has tallied a .222 average over 18 at bats with one double.
Jack Spanier, So., INF (Upper Valley Nighthawks) - Spanier made 31 starts over 32 appearances for the Gophers throughout his 2025 sophomore season. He tallied a .272 average and .745 OPS with one home run over 114 at bats. Over 22 appearances with the Nighthawks this summer, Spanier has collected a .264 average with five doubles and eight RBIs over 72 at bats.
Cape Cod League (2)
Weber Neels, Jr., C/INF (Bourne Braves) - Neels made 48 starts over 50 appearances for the Gophers throughout his junior campaign in 2025. His .284 batting average and team leading 15 home runs throughout the season helped earn him All-Big Ten Second Team honors. Neels has made 10 appearances for the Bourne Braves this summer, tallying a .303 average and .804 OPS with three RBIs.
Will Whelan, So., LHP (Bourne Braves) - Whelan made one start over 20 appearances for the Gophers throughout his 2025 sophomore season, collecting 39 strikeouts over 40.0 innings of work. Whelan has proven efficient in his six appearances for the Braves this summer, racking up 14 strikeouts over 14.0 innings and a 1.29 ERA. His efforts throughout the summer also earned him a roster spot in the 2025 Cape Cod League All Star Game on July 19.
