Softball Takes Two Saturday with Wins over Pitt, North Dakota

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota softball took a pair of games Saturday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, defeating Pitt and North Dakota.

Game 1 | Minnesota 8, Pittsburgh 0 (5 Innings)

Junior Syndey Schwartz threw a three-hit shutout and Taylor Krapf was 3-3 with four RBI to lead the Golden Gophers past the Pittsburgh Panthers, 8-0, in five innings.

Schwartz (8-14) went the distance for Minnesota (17-28), giving up three hits, walking one and striking out six.

Krapf recorded eight total bases in the game thanks to a pair of doubles and a home run, the 40th of her career. She became the seventh player in Gophers history to reach 40 homers, and it was her team-leading 15th of the year, tying for seventh-most in a season in program history. The two doubles bring her career total to 36, putting her ninth in program annals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minnesota plated two runs off of Pittsburgh pitching in the first inning, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Krapf.

The Golden Gophers then tacked on runs in the third and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored five times. The big hits in that inning were a two-run double off the bat of freshman Tinley Easton and a two-run double from Krapf.

GAME NOTES

» Minnesota went 4-for-10 (.400) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers limited Pittsburgh to just 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 21 Pittsburgh hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and five fly balls while striking out six.
» Pittsburgh was led offensively by junior Tieley Vaughn, who went 1-for-2.

Game 2 | Minnesota 5, North Dakota 3

In Saturday's nightcap, the Gophers pulled ahead in the second inning and never trailed from there on their way to a 5-3 win against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.

Freshman Natalie Susa (2-6) got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota (18-28). The righthander threw 5.1 shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and tied a career high by striking out six. Junior Syndey Schwartz closed out the ballgame and with one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one to earn the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Schwartz brought in two runs for Minnesota with a single that was followed by multiple North Dakota errors, scoring seniors Taylor Krapf and Nani Valencia.

The Golden Gophers kept the Fighting Hawks off the board before taking the lead in the second. Valencia knotted the game up at 3-3 with an RBI single, while Krapf later scored on a wild pitch to put Minnesota on top. Schwartz picked up her second RBI of the game with another run-scoring single.

The Gophers close out the weekend Sunday with a second matchup against North Dakota. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
