Minnesota Softball Prepares For Final Regular Season Road Trip to Wisconsin

MINNEAPOLIS, MN ----The 'U' heads back on the road this weekend. The Gophers head to Madison to take on Wisconsin. The Gophers will take on the Badgers 3 times April 19-21 in this Big Ten weekend series matchup. The Maroon and Gold has traveled a lot this year having been on the road six out of the first seven weeks of the season. This trip to Madison marks the final regular season roadtrip for the Gophers. Minnesota takes on Wisconsin Saturday beginning at 12pm CT, Sunday at 12pm CT, and finishing up Monday night at 6pm CT. Monday night's game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

Wisconsin

The Gophers continue their 51st season of competition against Wisconsin. The Badgers are 28-16 on the year and come into the matchup with the 'U' ranked #44 in the NCAA RPI rankings. Wisconsin comes into the matchup with the Gophers 8-8 in Big Ten conference play. They are currently 10th in the conference standings with two conference weeknds left before the Big Ten tournament. The Badgers are on a three game win streak after a win in their final game against Indiana last weekend and sweeping North Dakota State in a two game midweek matchup. Wisconsin is 9-1 at home, 5-8 on the road, and 14-7 in neutral site contests. The Gophers and Badgers have faced tough competition this season to this point. Both teams have played Louisville, Purdue, St. Thomas, and North Dakota State. The Badgers went 1-1 against Louisville while the Gophers fell twice to Louisville while in Boca Raton taking part in the Joan Joyce Classic and FAU. Minnesota went 1-2 against Purdue when the Gophers traveled to West Lafayette two weekends ago. Wisconsin split two games against the Boilermakers in Oklahoma City three weeks ago. The Badgers matched up with St. Thomas and North Dakota State in midweek matchups the past two weeks. Wisconsin swept both games against both teams with only one of the games being a tight contest. The Gophers took on both of these teams in the Gopher Indoor Classic at US Bank Stadium early in the season. Minnesota took care of business against NDSU twice and fell to St. Thomas in extra innings in their only matchup. In conference play, Wisconsin has taken on Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa, Washington, and Indiana to get to their 8-8 record. 

History

Minnesota and Wisconsin have a long history of playing each other dating back to 1996. The Gophers have a lead in the all-time series with 28 wins and 19 losses. Minnesota is 12-9 when playing the Badgers at home and have a 16-9 record when these two teams face off in Madison. This largest margin of victory for Minnesota came in the first ever matchup when the Gophers won 19-0. These teams last faced each other in 2024 when the Badgers came to Minneapolis for a midweek series. The Gophers took game one 7-3 and the Badgers got the split taking game two 3-0. In the last 10 games these two teams have played Minnesota is 8-2. The smallest margin of victory for the Gophers in that 10 game stretch was a 1-0 win in 2022. Minnesota won nine games in a row in this matchup. That streak started in 2017 and ended in 2022 when the Badgers won 2-0 in the B1G tournament.

Stats Highlights From Last Weekend

Last weekend the Gophers battled against #4 Oregon. Losing the final two games of the series by a combined two runs. Sydney Schwartz was a standout for the Maroon and Gold in the circle this past weekend. She posted a 2.33 ERA against one of the best hitting teams in the country. Schwartz appeared in two games making two starts and throwing 9.0 innings. She allowed three earned runs and totaled six strikeouts. The Ducks hit 3.24 against Sydney for the series. Breezy Burnett led the 'U' at the plate. She hit .333 with three hits in nine at-bats. She had one RBI, slugged .333, and posted an on-base% of .333. Jae Cosgriff, Nani Valencia, Margaret Tobias, and Taylor Krapf each hit .250 for the weekend. Cosgriff had two hits for the series. Valencia also posted two hits and led the Gophers in RBI with five including four via a grand slam hit in game three. Tobias also had two hits and she scored three runs. Krapf had another good weekend at the plate as she had one hit that yielded two RBI while slugging 1.000 and had an on-base% of .667. Natalie Susa also had a good weekend in the circle. She threw 8.0 innings and amassed nine strikeouts to lead the Gophers in that category.
