Minnesota Headed to California for Trio of Meets

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota competes in four different meets away from home this weekend. Starting with the Brian Clay Invitational (April 16-18) the Gophers will also compete at the 65th Mt. SAC Relays (April 17-19), the Beach Invitational (April 17-19) and the St. Thomas Easter Invitational (April 17). 

ABOUT THE BRIAN CLAY INVITATIONAL
Minnesota's week begins on Wednesday, April 16, with the distance crew. Day one begins at about 7:50 p.m. CT with the men's 3000m steeplechase. Wednesday's competition will run deep into the night with the final scheduled event, the 10,000m, for Minnesota starting at about 12:55 a.m. CT. The meet in Azusa will then conclude on Friday, April 18. The meet will be available to watch live via FloTrack's coverage. Live results are also available via FinishedResults.com.

ABOUT THE MT. SAC RELAYS
The Mt. SAC Relays will begin for Minnesota on Saturday at 2:25 p.m. CT with the men's 4x100m relay elite invitational. The Gophers final scheduled entry at the Mt. SAC Relays is the men's triple jump elite invitational which starts at 5:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. The meet will be available to watch live via RunnerSpace's coverage. Live results will also be available via RecordTiming.
 
ABOUT THE BEACH INVITE
Minnesota's time at the Beach Invitational will be from April 18-19, with the meet scheduled to run from 10:15 a.m. CT on Friday, April 18 until 6:33 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 19. ABOUT THE ST. THOMAS EASTER INVITATIONAL
A few of Minnesota's event groups will be in St. Paul, Minn., for the University of St. Thomas Easter Invitational on Thursday, April 17. The competitors for the Maroon and Gold will begin at 12 p.m. CT with the women's hammer throw with the men's discus throw ending the day for the 'U' at 6:55 p.m. CT. There is a live stream available for the meet via MIDCO Sports Plus. Live results are also available via Fast Finish Results.

LAST TIME OUT
Led by a hammer throw victory from Kostas Zaltos the University of Minnesota track and field team excelled in its competition down at the Throwtown Ramona World Invitational in Ramona, Okla. Minnesota also had a small contingent compete at the Bethel Invitational in Arden Hills, Minn.

Zaltos' victory in the hammer throw was paired with a second-place finish by teammate, and fellow Greek, Angelos Mantzouranis. Zaltos' tossed a sixth-attempt 77.12m (253-0) to claim the top spot while Mantzouranis' 76.39m (250-7) came on his third attempt. The 1-2 finish for the duo topped a field that included eight other top 100 hammer throwers in the world, according to the IAAF World Athletics rankings. MINNESOTA'S MEN RANKED THIRD NATIONALLY
The University of Minnesota men's track and field team remained inside the top three of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) team rankings this week. The latest rankings that dropped on April 15 saw the Golden Gophers inside the nation's top three for the third consecutive week to begin the outdoor season. 

Minnesota's men have been as high as No. 2 this season, which was the second highest ranking in program history. The only other time the men have been ranked higher in the current USTFCCCA ranking system was back in 2023 when the team opened the first outdoor ranking at No. 1. That season the Golden Gopher men finished the season ranked No. 20 and finished tied for 20th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Additionally since 1921, according to the USTFCCCA, in the final national poll Minnesota has been ranked No. 1 once (1948). 

MINNESOTA'S EVENT SQUAD RANKINGS
Alongside the national rankings, the USTFCCCA released its latest Event Squad rankings with the Gopher men holding on to its two top spots in the long jump and hammer throw. The men's long jump (7.60m | 24-11 1/4 average) and men's hammer throw (68.81m | 225-9 average) lead the way while the men's 200m (No. 7), 100m (No. 7) and shot put (No. 10) all sit inside the top 10 in the nation. The women's top event squad groups are its 3000m steeplechase that is No. 3 nationally with an average time of 10:37.75 and Minnesota's 400m hurdles quartet which is No. 7 in the NCAA with an average time of 1:00.17. UP NEXT
Next week Minnesota will host the Gary Wilson Invitational in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota Track Stadium. The home meet will be contested over one day on April 23, with the team then heading to the 115th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa from April 24-26.
