Gophers Fall to Houston Cougars in Final Game of Series

Drew Berkland led the Gopher offense with two hits and four RBIs. Josh Fitzgerald, Jake Elbeery, and Charlie Sutherland also chipped in two hits. Sutherland hit a lead off home run in the top of the third to get the Gopher offense going.
Justin Thorsteinson got the start on the mound for the Gophers. He threw 3.1 innings, striking out seven. Clausen came in and threw 1.2 innings, striking out three. Eli Sunquist threw 1.0, striking out two before Noah Rooney entered in the top of the seventh throwing 0.2 with one strike out and taking the loss.
Hemmesch entered in relief of Rooney and threw 1.1 innings.
How it Happened
- Sutherland got the Gophers on the board with a lead off home run in the top of the third. Fitzgerald followed with a double and scored on an RBI double by Berkland.
- The Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the third after scoring off a wild pitch, and an RBI double.
- Minnesota then tied the game 3 in the top of the fourth off an RBI single from Jack Spanier.
- Houston took back the lead after scoring one at the bottom of the fourth off a fielder's choice. They then scored another off and RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-3
- Berkland came up big for the Gophers in the top of the sixth with a three run home run. Fitzgerald, who reached on a walk and Jake Larson, who reached on an error, came around to score.
- The Cougars scored three in the bottom of the seventh to take an eight to six lead.
- Weber Neels was hit by a pitch to get the top of the ninth started. Pinch runner Brayden Hellum then came around to score on an error to cut the deficit to 1.

- Three Gophers recorded extra-base hits (Sutherland, Fitzgerald, and Berkland).
- Berkland and Elbeery have had one or more hits in all of the Gopher's games thus far.
