Minnesota competed in Houston, Texas, at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers saw five different program top 10 performances go down at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational in Houston, Texas, on Friday. Held at Yeoman Fieldhouse, the Gophers also won a total of six events with Anthonett Nabwe and Alliyah McNeil each claiming two.Â
The day started with a victory in the women's high jump via Alliyah McNeil, who cleared the mark of 1.80m (5-10 3/4). The clearance in Houston was the second straight season that McNeil opened the calendar year with an impressive leap. McNeil's success rolled over into the long jump later in the afternoon. McNeil, on her sixth and final attempt, put down a leap of 6.25m (20-6 1/4) to win and catapult herself to the No. 3 indoor long jumper in program history. McNeil now only trails Todea-Kay Willis and current Gopher coach Ayesha Champagnie on the indoor Minnesota top 10 long jump list.Â
A short time later Kennedy Martinson improved her 60m hurdles time down to a lifetime best of 8.57, good enough for the No. 8 time in program history. Martinson, along with three other Gophers, reached the 60m hurdles final where Zariyah Black finished as the top Minnesota finisher as the runner up in a time of 8.418.Â
The reigning Big Ten weight throw champion Anthonett Nabwe claimed both the weight throw and shot put victories on Friday. Nabwe started with a toss of 20.89m (68-6 1/2) to win the weight throw and followed that up with a shot put mark of 17.03m (55-10 1/2). The shot put throw goes down as the No. 4 mark in program history indoors, making Nabwe just the fourth Gopher to eclipse 17 meters in the event and the first indoors since 2022.Â
In the women's triple jump it was Brooke Moore who put down the No. 6 mark in program history indoors. The redshirt sophomore from Florissant, Mo., improved on her No. 6 jump in school history and was victorious in the process.Â
Ali Weimer capped off the big-time performances by clocking a 9:25.42 in the 3000m to win by a significant margin. Weimer's time slots her into the No. 10 time in school history, pushing past Stephanie Price's time from 2010.Â
The Maroon and Gold return home to host the Jack Johnson Classic on January 24-25 at the University Fieldhouse.Â
