MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-12, 0-0 Big Ten) will close out their non-conference road slate this weekend against the Creighton Bluejays (6-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) at Charles Schwab Field, the home of the College World Series. The two teams will play a three game series from Friday through Sunday in Omaha, Neb.

SCOUTING CREIGHTON
-After opening the season 0-4, Creighton has won six of the last eight. The Bluejays earned a shortened two-game sweep of St. Thomas and took two out of three from Loyola Marymount on the road. CU also beat Central Arkansas and UT-Martin in single game matchups.
-As team, the Bluejays were picked to finish second in the BIG EAST with 41 points, including one first place vote. Connecticut was the preseason favorite. Dylan Tebrake and Alan Roden were named the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher and Player of the Year, respectively.
-Tebrake closed last season 8-0 with a 2.72 ERA. He tossed 72.2 innings over 12 starts, notching 75 strikeouts. Roden was the 2021 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, hitting .378 with nine home runs, 17 doubles and 47 RBI.
-CU is led by 19th-year head coach Ed Servais, who has led the Bluejays to five NCAA Tournaments.

SERIES HISTORY
-Minnesota leads the all-time series, 28-23. The two-teams last met in 2020, when the Gophers won two straight games against the Bluejays at U.S. Bank Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT
-The Gophers fell in two of three games last weekend to the Air Force Falcons at U.S. Bank Stadium. Minnesota dropped an 8-7 decision Friday night. They led 5-1 heading into the seventh inning but the Falcons pushed across five runs in the seventh to take the lead for good.
-AFA won game two, 15--6, on Saturday. Minnesota bounced back for a 7-6 win on Sunday, riding strong pitching from Aidan Maldonado (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 4 SO) and a 3-for-4 day at the plate from Jack Kelly.

CAMBRIA COLLEGE CLASSIC RECAP
-The Gophers won one of their three games during the Cambria College Classic from March 4-6.
-They fell, 5-4, to No. 25 West Virginia on Friday night. Minnesota led 4-2 heading into the seventh inning, but three late WVU runs sealed the win.
-Jack Kelly went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Minnesota to an 8-1 win over Kansas Saturday. J.P. Massey went 6.2 innings with 8 K's.
-The 'U' fell to No. 12 Notre Dame, 3-1 on Sunday. Chase Stanke hit his team-leading seventh homer.

STANKE SURGING TO START 2022
-Minnesota starting catcher Chase Stanke, a Buster Posey Watch list member, has been crushing the ball to start 2022. He ranks second in the Big Ten in home runs (7) and ranks ninth in slugging pct. (.683) and seventh in doubles (6). 13 of his 16 hits are for extra bases.

BERTRAND EARNING HIS PRAISE
-Gophers redshirt senior outfielder Easton Bertrand was named as a top-150 (No. 110) outfielder in the country by D1Baseball.com. The Illinois native ranks in the top ten in the Big Ten in slg.% (8th, .702) and batting avg. (10th, .383).

IRELAND BACK TO WORK
-Junior Friday starter Sam Ireland has been stellar to start the 2022 season. Through four starts, he's 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA and 32 strikeouts while opposing hitters are swatting just .184 against him. He ranks third in the B1G in K's, fifth in ERA and sixth in innings pitched (23.2).
-He became the first Gopher since Max Meyer in 2020 to strike out 15-or-more batters in his first two starts of the season.

MASSEY AND MALDONADO MAKING A PUSH
-Saturday and Sunday starters J.P. Massey and Aidan Maldonado have each posted two quality starts this season.
-Massey tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts on Feb. 27 vs. Indiana State. He followed that up with eight strikeouts in a career-high 6.2 innings in a win over Kansas on March 5.
-Maldonado has lasted five-plus innings in each of his last two starts, allowing two earned runs each time. He struck out five vs. Notre Dame and four vs. Air Force on Sunday.

GOPHERS HITTING THE LONG BALL
-Minnesota ranks third in the Big Ten and No. 33 in the nation with 22 home runs in 17 games this season. Chase Stanke ranks second in the conference with seven while Easton Bertrand and Jack Kelly have hit four apiece. Ronald Sweeny is up next with three.

BATEMAN SETS THE TONE
-Sophomore center fielder Brett Bateman leads the team in hits (20) and at bats (72). He's also swiped a team-best six bases, which ranks second in the league.

KELLY CRUSHING OPPOSING PITCHING
-Senior utility player Jack Kelly has been on a tear in his final collegiate season.
-In three games vs. Air Force, he hit .667 with two home runs, four extra base hits and 9 RBI
-B1G Ranks: Batting Avg.: .412 (1st), SLG%: .804 (2nd), RBI: 20 (4th).
