Michigan Evens Series with Gophers, 5-3

4/6/2019 4:48:00 PM | Baseball

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Gopher Baseball team tried to rally for a second-straight day but fell just short, dropping game two of its Big Ten Conference series to Michigan 5-3 at the Wilpon Complex. Knotted at a game apiece, the two teams will settle the three-game set on Sunday.

Jack Wassel started his day with three-straight singles for Minnesota (13-15, 6-2 Big Ten), giving the Gophers an early 1-0 lead in the second after Easton Bertrand reached leading off the inning after being hit by a pitch. Michigan (21-8, 3-1 Big Ten) answered when Jesse Franklin drove in two with a single in the bottom of the frame, but Wassel had the answer with another RBI single in the fourth, bringing home Jordan Kozicky who singled earlier in the inning.

Jake Stevenson returned to the starting rotation for Minnesota, working the first 4.1 innings, chased after Jordan Brewer hit a solo home run in the fifth. Stevenson surrendered three earned on four hits while striking out six. Michigan start Karl Kauffman tossed 6.0 innings, allowing two earned on six hits while striking out five. He handed the ball to Willie Weiss (2-1) in the seventh, and Eli Wilson greeted the reliever with a solo home run of his own.

Tied up 3-3, the game would be turned over to the bullpens. After a scoreless sixth inning, Ryan Duffy (0-1) could not get through a second full inning, giving up a pair of walks and a two-run double by Ako Thomas. Duffy allowed just the one hit in 1.2 innings, striking out one batter but the two walks would come around to haunt him.

Minnesota put a pair of runners on in the ninth with a walk by Ben Mezzenga and a single off the bat of Wilson, but Weiss got Max Meyer to ground into an inning-ending double play to stifle the rally.

NOTABLE
Wassel's three hits matched his career high, a feat he had not executed since March 17, 2018 at TCU … Stevenson had not started since week one. His 4.1 innings were a season-long for the senior, and his six strikeouts marked a career high.

UP NEXT
The Big Ten series concludes Sunday in Ann Arbor with first pitch set for 12 p.m. CDT. The series finale will be streamed on BTN Plus.
