Minnesota Opens Big Ten Play with 5-1 Win at Penn State

3/23/2019 6:41:00 PM | Baseball

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A fortuitous fourth inning carried the University of Minnesota baseball team to a 5-1 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon as the Gophers victoriously opened Big Ten play at Medlar Field.

The Maroon & Gold have now won 13-straight games against the Nittany Lions with the Big Ten programs set to conclude this weekend's series in University Park with a doubleheader on Sunday.

Minnesota (6-13 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) surrendered just one run in the series opener – the fewest runs allowed by the Gophers this season – as an infield single by Gavin Homer with the bases loaded drove in Ryan Ford for Penn State's lone run of the game during the second inning.

After that, it was all Maroon & Gold on the scoreboard including a four-run fourth inning. Eli Wilson picked up Minnesota's first hit of the game to lead off the inning with a single to right field and ended up on third after Easton Bertrand laid down a sacrifice bunt that was followed up by a throwing error on Penn State. Jordan Kozicky then sent a shot to the right field warning track that was misplayed by the Nittany Lion outfielder as Wilson and Bertrand came across the plate. Max Meyer proceeded to reach on an infield error that saw Kozicky score from third base while the Gophers starting pitcher came home on an ensuing double down the left field line by Ben Mezzenga to close out the four-run inning for the 'U'.

The Gophers added another run in the top of the seventh inning when Bertrand doubled off the left field wall to score Cole McDevitt. The right fielder extended his team-best hitting streak to eight games while Jack Wassel reached base safely for the 10th-straight game after picking up a walk and adding a single later in the contest.

Meyer picked up the win for Minnesota to move to 2-1 on the season. The sophomore worked six innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and one earned run allowed. Nick Lackney picked up the save for the Maroon & Gold, throwing the final three innings with two strikeouts and one walk for his second save of the year. Dante Biasi suffered the loss for Penn State despite striking out 12 batters in six innings of work, falling to 2-2 on the year.

Single-game tickets for all Siebert Field home games are now available. The Maroon & Gold return to campus next Friday, March 29 to begin a three-game series against Nebraska.
