The starting pitcher excelled on the mound and at the plate as Minnesota dominated the Dirtbags.
Starter Max Meyer and the Golden Gophers' bats were both on fire as Minnesota (4-11) opened its series at Long Beach State with a 6-2 win. The Maroon and Gold tallied 13 hits while holding the Dirtbags (2-14) to four and playing errorless defense.
Meyer (1-1) did not allow a hit until there was one out in the seventh inning. He would not allow another, pitching a career-long 7.2 innings and striking out a career-high nine batters in his second start. Meyer went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run and three RBIs.
Eli Wilson hit 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and threw out a runner at second. Cole McDevitt was 2-for-5 with a run and a double. Riley Smith went 2-for-4 with a run.
In the fourth inning, Easton Bertrand hit a double over the center fielder's head, and the Gophers strung together back-to-back two-out hits for a 2-0 lead. Meyer drove in Bertrand, then Jordan Kozicky hit a triple to right-center to score Meyer.
Minnesota added to its lead in the fifth. Ben Mezzenga singled through the right side, then McDevitt whacked a double off the left field wall. Wilson drove both runners in with a single to right-center, putting the Gophers ahead 4-0.
Meyer faced the minimum number of batters through six. He had walked two batters, but one was caught stealing and the other was part of a double play. Chase Luttrell singled down the left field line in the seventh for the Dirtbags' first hit, but Meyer retired the next two batters before Gus Radel came in to strike out the last of the inning.
Bertrand was hit by pitch to lead off the Gophers' half of the eighth. Smith followed up with a bunt single, and both runners advanced when the Dirtbags did not have third base covered. Meyer hit a double to send Bertrand and Smith home for a 6-0 lead.
The Dirtbags rallied in their last turn at the plate, scoring two runs on three hits in the ninth. Jeff Fasching had entered the game with two men on base and struck out two before allowing two singles. Brett Schulze picked up his first save of the season by striking out third baseman Tanner Carlson to end the game. Minnesota's pitching staff tallied 13 strikeouts.
Minnesota and Long Beach State will play the second game of their series Saturday at 8 p.m. CDT.
