Gophers Drop Second Game at LBSU 6-4

3/16/2019 11:31:00 PM | Baseball

Jordan Kozicky homered in the loss.

The University of Minnesota (4-12) baseball team lost 6-4 at Long Beach State Saturday night. The Dirtbags (3-14) took the lead with a three-run seventh inning. Jordan Kozicky hit 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season for the Gophers. Ben Mezzenga was also 2-for-4 with a run.

The Gophers tallied eight hits and four errors, while Long Beach State had seven hits and one error. Dirtbags starter Adam Seminaris (2-2) got the win, while Nick Lackney (0-3) got the loss.

Minnesota took an early lead sparked by Mezzenga's leadoff single. He advanced when Cole McDevitt reached on an error, and scored on Eli Wilson's double. Long Beach State answered when it took advantage of a walk, a steal, and two errors in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1. The Dirtbags went up 2-1 the next inning after a triple and a sacrifice fly.

Minnesota regained the lead with a two-out rally in the fourth. Kozicky hit a home run to dead center field, around 400 feet, scoring Max Meyer, who had reached on a walk. Back-to-back singles by Jack Wassel and Zack Raabe, with a wild pitch between them, tacked on another run to make it 4-2.

The Dirtbags evened the game in their half of the same inning. They got runners on the corners with a walk and a hit plus throwing error, then scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Minnesota starter Patrick Fredrickson completed 3 2/3 innings,  allowing three hits, four runs, two earned runs and three walks, and striking out one. Lackney got a strikeout in relief to end the fourth.

Minnesota's bats were quiet for the next three innings after their two-run fourth. The Gopher defense neutralized a Long Beach State double plus error in the fifth when Wassel threw home for an out on a grounder, and Eli Wilson threw out Calvin Estrada trying to steal second.

Lackney pitched another scoreless inning in the sixth before the Dirtbags reclaimed the lead in the seventh. Two bunt singles led off the inning, and both runners went on to score and make it 6-4. The sixth run scored on what had a chance to be a double play by the Gopher defense, but ended up being a fielder's choice when Minnesota was not able to get a strong throw to first around the Long Beach State runner. Jake Stevenson pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and sent the Dirtbags down in order in the eighth.

The Gophers threatened in their last chance at the plate. Easton Bertrand singled up the middle to start the inning. Riley Smith and Meyer both flied out to right, with Estrada making a diving catch to retire Meyer. Kozicky singled to center with two outs, then Wassel walked to load the bases before a strikeout ended the game.

Minnesota will conclude its series against the Dirtbags on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. CDT.
