Gophers Comeback vs No. 10 LBSU Falls Short

Minneapolis, Minn. - Jordan Kozicky extended his on-base streak to 28 consecutive games Friday as Minnesota fell to No. 10 Long Beach State 3-2.

The Gophers are now 29-16 overall on the season after falling to the Dirtbags.

The Maroon and Gold struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Kozicky reached with a two-out single then scored when Terrin Vavra doubled down the left field line. This was Vavra's 16th RBI of the season and sixth double.

Long Beach State tied the game in the top of the fourth inning then scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings. Cole McDevitt led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to left field then advanced to second base on a Kozicky walk. Two batters later Micah Coffey walked to fill the bases for Toby Hanson who also walked making it a one run game. Jordan Smith grounded out to second base to end the inning.

Lucas Gilbreath started on the mound and tossed seven innings. He allowed three earned runs on five hits. The lefty struck out six batters but picked up his first loss of the season.

Tim Shannon pitched the final two innings where he did not allow a hit. The senior ended up recording two strikeouts.

Up Next
Tomorrow the two teams will play game two of the series beginning at 2 p.m. It will also be Pups in the Park Night and men's basketball coach, Richard Pitino, will throw out the first pitch.

Game Notes

  • Coffey recorded three walks.
  • Hanson now has 45 RBIs, a team high.
  • Gilbreath is now 5-1 with 80 strikeouts on the season.
  • Shannon made his 25th appearance of the season and picked up his 28th strikeout.
