Hanson Walks Off Gophers

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota won their eighth game of the season in walk-off fashion as they defeated Milwaukee 5-4 Wednesday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Minnesota struck first in the third inning when they went up 1-0 when Terrin Vavra tripled to right center field to lead off the inning and was then brought in on a Micah Coffey ground out.
The Gophers then went up 2-0 in the fourth inning when Alex Boxwell scored on a Cole McDevitt ground out. Boxwell was on third base after leading off with a single up the middle then advanced when the Panthers' second baseman made a throwing error on a Jordan Smith ground ball.
Milwaukee took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning but the Maroon and Gold answered back with a Coffey single that scored Ben Mezzenga. On the same play Luke Pettersen scored because of a throwing error by the second baseman to give Minnesota a 4-3 lead.
Once again the Panthers tied the game up 4-4 in the eighth inning. Pettersen led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single up the middle. Following Pettersen, Vavra was attempting a sacrifice bunt when he was hit by a pitch. With two runners on and no outs Coffey flew out to center field the Matt Stemper struck out looking.
With two outs in the inning, junior first baseman Toby Hanson drove the ball out to deep center field for a ground rule double that scored Pettersen for the game winning run.
Sophomore Reggie Meyer started on the mound for the Gophers tonight where he went 5.0 innings. The right hander allowed only three hits, one earned run and struck out two batters.
The first pitcher out of the bullpen was Jake Stevenson who last 1.2 innings. He allowed three hits, two earned runs and had one strike out.
Tim Shannon followed Stevenson and went 1.1 innings where he struck out one batter. Brian Glowicki game into the game at the beginning of the ninth inning, sending down the Panthers in order. He recorded one strike out and picked up his first win of the season.
