Final Stats

The University of Minnesota baseball team defeated Hamline University, 3-1, tonight at the H.H.H. Metrodome. With the win, the Gophers advance to 7-5 in the regular season. Hamline now sits at a record of 3-3.

The Gophers utilized six pitchers as Alex Tukey earned his first victory of the season. He came in relief over starter Kyle O'Shea and had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Jake Bergren and Troy Larson scored two of the three runs Gopher runs, while Kurt Schlangen went 1-4 with an RBI.

Minnesota stole four bases in the game and added two sacrifice flies. In all, the Gophers had 13 position players see action. Along with O'Shea and Tukey, Minnesota also used Drew Ghelfi, Dalton Sawyer, Kevin Kray before Billy Soule had his fourth save of the season.

Hamline would get on the board when Jordan Buck singled to left and scored Tyler Johnson after he reached third on a wild pitch. Minnesota, however, would knot the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Handel started things off on a walk. As he was stealing second, he went to third on a wild pitch. JT Canakes would score Handel on a sacrifice fly to put the game at 1-1 after four.

Minnesota added to its lead when it scored in the fifth and seventh innings for the 3-1 final. Schlangen drove home Bergren when he hit a single through the left side and held his fifth RBI of the season. Bergren reached base on a single and stole second just before Schlangen plated him.

Minnesota would add another run in the seventh for the 3-1 final. Larson started the inning with an infield single. On an attempt to pick off Larson, Hamline pitcher Rob Miller overthrew first base as it rolled to the Gopher bullpen. Larson advanced to third and Mark Tatera pushed across the run on a sacrifice fly.

Minnesota begins a three game home series this weekend against Western Illinois. First game is set to start this Friday, March 8, 2013 at 6:35 p.m.
