It only took the University of Minnesota women's hockey team eight seconds to pounce on Bemidji State en route to an 8-0 rout. A total of seven different Golden Gophers netted a goal in the opening game of the team's final home series.
Junior Amanda Kessel tallied a pair of goals, including the game-winner just eight seconds into the game. She lit the lamp again 31 seconds into the second period to give Minnesota (31-0-0, 25-0-0 WCHA) a 5-0 lead.
After Kessel's goal to begin the game, sophomore Rachael Bona recorded a goal just 59 seconds later. The Gophers would extend their lead from 2-0 to 4-0 thanks to goals from Rachel Ramsey and Hannah Brandt.
Minnesota exploded for four goals and 22 shots on goal in the first period, while BSU (6-21-2, 5-19-1 WCHA) only challenged Noora Raty four times.
Räty recorded 18 saves to garner her 38th career shutout. She is now two shutouts away from breaking the NCAA record held by Jessie Vetter (29).
The Maroon & Gold added three more goals in the second period beginning with Kessel's one-timer. Becky Kortum garnered the next goal by going top shelf on the Beavers' goaltender, while Milica McMillen went end-to-end and finished with a toe drag into the back of the net.
Senior Katie Frischmann was the lone Gopher to notch a goal in the third period. Her goal came at 7:46 and was her first of the season.
The Gophers extended their NCAA record winning streak to 39 consecutive games.
The two WCHA foes faceoff again tomorrow at 4 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the six Gopher seniors will be honored.
