Minnesota picked up its third win of the season on Sunday evening
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota soccer team (3-1-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) defeated the University of St. Thomas (0-3-1, 0-0-0 Summit League) 2-1 on Sunday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in front of 992 fans.
The crowd was Minnesota's largest since playing Milwaukee on Sept. 5, 2024 (934).
The Golden Gophers controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, outshooting the Tommies 27-3 overall and 15-2 on target. Minnesota also held a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks and owned 64 percent of total match possession.
Minnesota established heavy offensive pressure early in the first half, keeping St. Thomas in its own defensive third and creating several set-piece opportunities. The persistent attack paid off in the 20th minute when Ellen Neuharth broke the deadlock. Hailee Christensen set up the play, feeding Neuharth for her first goal of the season to give the Maroon and Gold a 1-0 lead. Minnesota outshot St. Thomas 15-1 in the opening 45 minutes to take a one-goal advantage into halftime.
The Gophers doubled their advantage quickly coming out of the break. In the 50th minute, off of a corner kick from Taylor Heimerl, defender Keegan Schmeiser connected with Caroline Birdsell, who finished past the goalkeeper at the 49:52 mark to make it 2-0.
St. Thomas answered back in the 56th minute when Izzy McEwan capitalized on passes from Melina Knowles and Norah Benson to cut the deficit to 2-1. Despite the push from the Tommies, Minnesota's back line limited any further chances, holding St. Thomas to just two total shots on goal all evening.
Gopher goalkeeper Sarah Martin picked up her third victory of the season in net.
Minnesota returns home Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. CT to host Colorado College on Senior Day, celebrating its nine seniors.
