IOWA CITY, IA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team launched their three game weekend against the University of Iowa this afternoon, benefiting off an eight strikeout performance from Cole Selvig to take game one 9-4 in Iowa City.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Selvig tossed seven innings without walking anyone for the win today. Joe Sperry also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, throwing two scoreless innings with no walks and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota got on the scoreboard first to start the day, tallying an early pair of runs on a double down the left field line from Davis Hamilton. The Gophers pushed their advantage to a three run lead before the end of the frame, tallying another on a RBI groundout from Charlie Sutherland.
The Hawkeyes tallied a run on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, but Jack Bello was quick to match it with a solo home run of his own in the top of the second to push the score to 4-1.
Minnesota continued to stack on the runs with RBI groundouts from Jameson Martin and Weber Neels in the third and fourth innings, giving the Gophers a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth.
Another solo home run from Iowa cut the Gopher lead to four runs heading into the sixth, but an RBI double from Neels down the right field line quickly canceled things out to return the game to a five run advantage.
Iowa plated two on a double in the seventh inning to keep things competitive, but a bases loaded hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly to center field from Charlie Sutherland in the eighth pushed the score to 9-4 and held till the end for the game one victory.
