Gophers Secure Season Series Sweep Over St. Thomas With 12-1 Victory

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team hosted the University of St. Thomas for their final mid-week matchup of the 2026 season tonight, putting together another run rule performance with a 12-1 victory over the Tommies at Siebert Field.
Tyler Hemmesch picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota. The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Logan Winkelman also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, starting the ballgame and throwing two innings with two strikeouts.
Sutherland went 4-for-4 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with a double while driving in seven runs. Davis Hamilton added to Sutherland's awesome power-hitting performance by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Jack Spanier also helped out for the Golden Gophers, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Minnesota scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI groundout from Weber Neels and a two-run homer from Charlie Sutherland.
The Tommies failed to push any runs across before the Gophers built on their lead in the third inning. Minnesota scored three runs in the frame on a two-run single off the bat of Charlie Sutherland and a one-run single from Ty Allen, which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Gophers.
Minnesota kept St. Thomas (MN) without a run before building their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Gophers scored two runs when a single from Davis Hamilton brought home Sam Hunt and Jack Spanier.
Minnesota held the Tommies scoreless yet again before their offense got in gear the next inning. An RBI groundout off the bat of Easton Richter scored the lone run of the inning for the Gophers, bringing the Minnesota advantage to 9-1.
The Gophers kept St. Thomas (MN) off the board before expanding their lead to 12-1 to close things out in the seventh inning. Minnesota scored three runs on a three-run homer off the bat of Charlie Sutherland, ending the game and securing the Gophers' season series sweep over the Tommies.
