Gophers Surge to Dominant 24-2 Victory Over St. Thomas

4/14/2026 7:43:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball team traveled across town to take on the University of St. Thomas this afternoon in a mid-week matchup, making a statement and taking down the Tommies 24-2 at Koch Diamond.

Tyler Hemmesch picked up the victory out of the bullpen for the Golden Gophers, tossing one inning and tallying two strikeouts. Luke Ryerse got the ball to start the afternoon for Minnesota, going for three innings and tallying four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Golden Gophers were led by Jack Mosh, who went 3-for-3 on the day with one RBI. Jack Spanier compiled a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. Charlie Sutherland also contributed for Minnesota, going 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, and two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling to an early 1-0 deficit, the Gophers got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, collecting a pair of runs on a pair of sacrifice flies to right field off the bats of Ty Allen and Jack Bello.

Minnesota kept the Tommies off the board before adding to their 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, adding three runs on a pair of RBI singles from Jack Mosh and Jack Spanier. The Gophers added one more on a wild pitch before the end of the inning, taking a 6-1 lead.

The Tommies answered back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single of their own, cutting the score to 6-2 heading into the fifth.

The Gophers added nine runs to the total in the top of the fifth to take a 15-2 lead. Started off by a two run home run from Charlie Sutherland, Minnesota added five runs on four straight hits from Jackson Akin, Spanier, Weber Neels, and Easton Richter. Another run came across on a double steal situation, before Allen's second sacrifice fly of the game tallied the ninth run of the inning.

Minnesota held St. Thomas off the scoreboard again before continuing their offensive surge with an eight run inning in the sixth. Back to back bases loaded hit by pitches and a bases loaded walk tallied the first three runs of the inning, leading up to a two RBI double from Jake Quinn to get the Gophers to a 20-2 lead. A two RBI single from Brayden Hellum and an RBI fielder's choice grounder from Michael Starrs added another three before the end of the frame.

The Golden Gophers capped things off in the top of the seventh, adding one more insurance run on a solo home run from Ethan Cole and winning the crosstown matchup at a 24-2 score.
