No. 13 Gophers Set for Road Trip at No. 18 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 13 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team (9-3, 7-2 B1G) will hit the road for its final non-conference road meet of 2026. The first rotation will begin at 5:45 p.m. CT/6:45 p.m. ET on ESPN+ (ACCNX) at Carmichael Arena.

The Tarheels (7-8, 1-5 ACC) rank 18th in the country coming into the meet, ranking fourth in the ACC. Their vault team ranks 11th, bars 23rd, beam 18th and floor team 19th. This week and next Sunday's senior day meet are Minnesota's final two tuneups before the 2026 Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill.

2026 SO FAR

  • The Minnesota gymnastics team enters Friday's meet with a 9-3 (7-2 B1G) record. They've competed against a difficult schedule so far, but have posted a 5-2 record against top-25 ranked teams.
  • After going 1-1 in their first meet at No. 5 Utah and vs. Iowa, Minnesota took down consecutive top-10 ranked opponents in No. 10 Arkansas and No. 5 Michigan at home. They also won Feb. 14 at No. 16 PSU for their first road win.
  • Following a setback at Nebraska on Jan. 24, Minnesota reeled off consecutive 197+ performances with a 197.050 win over Iowa and a season-best 197.275 in a defeat to No. 5 UCLA.
  • The Gophers defeated Washington in their meet on Feb. 20, winning 196.950-196.300 to earn their second straight road win.
  • Minnesota had its best performance of the season March 1 at the Big 4, scoring a Big Ten-best 197.700. Bars, beam and floor had their best scores of the season and Arianna Ostrum won the all-around, bars and floor titles.
  • The 'U' holds 30 event titles this year across nine meets, led by and freshman Arianna Ostrum with eight and junior Jordyn Lyden with six.
  • Minnesota ranks 13th overall in the Road to Nationals rankings, placing 16th on vault, 17th on bars, 9th on beam and 14th on the floor.
  • The 'U' is 6-1 at home this year, 2-2 on the road and 1-0 at neutral sites. In Big Ten competitions, they're 2-1 at home and 1-1 on the road thus far.
  • Picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, Minnesota finished second in the Big Ten standings (7-2) behind only UCLA (9-0).
  • Jordyn Lyden and Gianna Gerdes were picked as Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch for Minnesota. Lyden is set to earn All-B1G postseason honors as well.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA

  • The No. 18 North Carolina Tarheels (7-8, 1-5 ACC) are led by fifth-year head coach Danna Durante. Last year, the team finished sixth at the Tuscaloosa Regional. In 2024, UNC took third at the ACC Championships.
  • In 2026, the program has taken another step forward, ranking in the top 20 in the WCGA rankings. They recorded a season-high 196.750 at California on Feb. 20, falling narrowly by just .5.
  • The Tarheels are led by AAI Award Nominee Gwen Fink, the 2025 ACC Balance Beam Champion and the ACC Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 9. She leads UNC with a 39.119 average in the all-around (26th nationally), while Sydney Seabrooks (39.129 avg.) ranks 38th.
  • Their best win of the season came on Feb. 15 vs. No. 17 Auburn at the Fort Worth Convention Center. They also beat No. 21 NC State there.

BIG 4 MEET RECAP

  • The No. 13 Minnesota gymnastics team took home its second straight Big 4 title on Sunday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion. The Gophers posted a season-high score of 197.700 to take down No. 11 Michigan State, Illinois and Rutgers. MSU took second with a 196.650 while Rutgers finished third with a 195.750. Illinois placed fourth at 195.650. 
  • Minnesota finished their conference slate with a 7-2 mark (9-3 overall), meaning they placed second in the league and will compete at the third and final session at the Big Ten Championships with UCLA, Michigan and Michigan State.
  • "The team has been so consistent but we always talked about taking that next step," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We knew what we needed to do and always had belief on what was possible. They believed today and it showed up in this incredible environment."
  • 4,312 fans showed up to watch the Gophers win the Big 4 title as they posted scores of 49.225 on vault, 49.425 on bars, 49.525 on beam and 49.525 on the floor. The bars, beam and floor scores were all season-bests for the 'U'.
  • Minnesota earned event titles on all four apparatuses Sunday afternoon. Teryn Crump earned a vault title with her 9.900, her fourth of the season.
  • Arianna Ostrum split the bars title (9.925) with Illinois' Chloe Cho. Jordyn Lyden (9.950) split the beam title with Cho as well. On the floor, Lyden, Ostrum and Sophie Swartzmiller split the title with Michigan State's MaKayla Tucker (9.925).
  • Ostrum won the all-around title all by herself with a career-best 39.625. She had 9.925's on three events and outlasted Illinois' Cho (39.575) and MSU's Nikki Smith (39.450).

EVENT TITLES APLENTY

  • So far in 2026, the 'U' holds 30 event titles. Arianna Ostrum leads the way with eight while Jordyn Lyden is up next with seven. Eight athletes have won at least one title and seven have taken home multiple awards.
  • Teryn Crump (9.900) won on vault, Jordyn Lyden (9.925) won on bars and Leah Gonsiorowski (9.900) won on the floor vs. Michigan. Arianna Ostrum and Sophie Swartzmiller (9.875) tied for the floor title vs. Arkansas.
  • On Jan. 31 vs. Iowa, Minnesota won four more titles. Arianna Ostrum tallied a career-best 9.900 on vault for her third title of the season, including first on the event. Jordyn Lyden won her second bars title of the year with a 9.900 while Lauren Pearl won on beam with a 9.900, her first event title of the year. Sophie Swartzmiller won her second floor title of 2026 with a 9.900, tying a career-best.
  • On Feb. 7 vs. UCLA, Arianna Ostrum (9.950) won on vault and Lauren Pearl (9.925) tied for the beam title. Ostrum won again on vault Feb. 14 at PSU while Ava Stewart (9.950) won on beam. Lyden, Saltzmann and Swartzmiller (9.875) tied for the floor title.
  • Feb. 20 at Washington saw Crump (9.900) win on vault and Lyden (9.925) win with the same score on both bars and floor.
  • March 1 saw Ostrum win the all-around, bars and floor while Lyden won on beam and tied on the floor with Ostrum and Swartzmiller. Teryn Crump took home the title on vault.
  • In 2025, Minnesota won 47 event titles. That included 11 vault, 13 bars, 12 beam and 11 floor.

WCGA AND ROAD TO NATIONALS RANKINGS

  • After week nine, Minnesota stayed at No. 13 (196.603 avg.) in the Road to Nationals rankings. The Gophers rank 15th on vault (49.114 avg.), 17th on bars (49.092 avg.), 9th on beam (49.217 avg.), and 14th on floor (49.303 avg.).
  • As it stands today as the 13-seed, Minnesota is projected to be in a regional with No. 4 Florida, No. 5 UCLA and No. 12 Utah.
  • Minnesota began 2026 ranked No. 15 in the WCGA Preseason poll. They ranked behind only No. 4 UCLA, No. 6 Michigan St. and No. 14 Michigan in the Big Ten. Currently, UCLA is 5th, Michigan is 8th and Michigan State is 11th.

INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS

  • Nationally, Minnesota has four gymnasts ranked in the top-50 of events this season.
  • Jordyn Lyden ranks 38th on bars (9.867 avg.), 36th on beam (9.833 avg.) and 36th on the floor (9.878 avg.). She ranks 8th, 9th and 9th in the B1G on those events, respectively.
  • Teryn Crump ranks 24th on vault (9.844 avg.), that mark puts her at No. 4 in the Big Ten.
  • Sarah Moraw ranks 41st nationally on beam (9.850 avg.) and 11th in the Big Ten.
  • Arianna Ostrum ranks 49th nationally on beam (9.863 avg.).

TOP SCORES PER EVENT

  • Minnesota's top vault performance of the year came on Feb. 7 vs. UCLA, as the Gophers totaled 49.250. On bars, their top outing came on Jan. 31 vs. Iowa with a 49.300.
  • For the beam team, their 49.500 on Feb. 14 at PSU took the cake. Ava Stewart led the group with her career-high 9.950.
  • On the floor, Minnesota tallied a 49.350 Jan. 24 at Nebraska. They've gone 49.300-or-higher in four of the last five meets.
  • Minnesota's team score of 197.150 on Jan. 17 was the earliest in a season the Gophers recorded a 197-or-higher since totaling a 197.025 on Jan. 15, 2021.
  • The 'U' hit a season-best 197.275 Feb. 7 vs. UCLA. Minnesota went 197 for the fourth time at PSU with a 197.075.

BIG TEN WEEKLY AWARDS

  • Gophers freshman Arianna Ostrum was named Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Week while junior Jordyn Lyden earned Event Specialist of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
  • Ostrum had the day of her career so far on Sunday, posting a 39.625 all-around score in a Big 4 Meet title for Minnesota. She helped Minnesota to a season-high 197.700 score, posting team season-bests on bars, beam and floor. Ostrum won event titles in the all-around, uneven bars and on the floor. She earned a career-best 9.925 on the uneven bars, topping her previous best of 9.775, to win her first title on the event. She posted a 9.925 balance beam score. Ostrum also tied for the event title on the floor with a 9.925.
  • Jordyn Lyden had one of the best days of her junior season, winning two event titles in a Big 4 Meet title for Minnesota. She tied for her third floor title of the season with a 9.925 and she won an event title on balance beam with a 9.950. It was her first beam title of the year. Lyden then posted a 9.875 on the uneven bars, missing winning the event title by just 0.5, meaning she would have won all three events.
  • Lacie Saltzmann won Big Ten Freshman of the Week in mid-January and is the team's only other weekly award winner this season.    

LYDEN LIGHTS IT UP 

  • Gophers junior Jordyn Lyden has had a stellar first three years in the program. As a rookie in 2024, she was a Big Ten Freshman of the Week three separate times, competing in every meet. She tied the school record at Penn State in the balance beam, going 9.975.
  • So far this season, Lyden holds a season-best of 9.925 on bars (Jan. 17 vs. Michigan). She hit her career-best on beam on March 1 at the Big 4 meet with a score of 9.950. She posted a career-best 9.950 floor score Feb. 7 vs. UCLA, topping her previous 9.875 best.
  • Lyden has been Minnesota's most consistent gymnast in 2026 and ranks 38th in the country on bars, 36th on beam and 36th on floor. Those marks put her at 9th, 8th and 8th, respectively, in the Big Ten on each event.
  • Last year, Lyden was named to the Big Ten All-Championships Team after going 9.950 on the uneven bars at the Big Ten Championships. She tied for third at the NCAA Regionals with a 9.900 bars score. As a freshman in 2024, she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times.
  • Lyden earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors in 2025, her first career postseason honor.
  • She earned Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on March 1 after scores of 9.950 on beam, 9.925 on floor and 9.875 on bars. She won event titles on beam and floor.
