Minnesota scored a 196.925
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- No. 13 Minnesota gymnastics fell to No. 18 North Carolina on Friday night at Carmichael Arena, 197.200-196.925. With the loss, the Gophers fell to 9-4 (7-2 B1G) on the season. Minnesota will wrap up its regular season next Sunday in a quad meet at Maturi Pavilion.
"It was not our best meet tonight but there were definitely some highlights," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Beam was excellent - that's the kind of performance we expected there. We had an unfortunate fall on bars with Lacie [Saltzmann], but we're happy that she's okay. Vault and floor we had some tough moments as well. I thought we had some really good moments on bars."
North Carolina totaled a season-best 197.200 while the Gophers fell to 2-3 on the road with a 196.925 score. UNC's previous best on the season was a 196.950.
"North Carolina had a great meet," Hansen said. "They were awesome all-around and we just made a couple too many mistakes tonight."
Minnesota scored 49.025 on vault, 49.300 on bars, 49.475 on beam and 49.125 on the floor. UNC went 49.250 on vault, 49.150 on bars, 49.450 on beam and 49.375 on the floor.
Arianna Ostrum won the all-around title for the second straight meet with a 39.450. She tied with UNC's Sydney Seabrooks. Kaya Forbes from UNC took the vault title with a 9.900 while Jordyn Lyden won on bars with the same score. Jojo Valaholvic earned the beam title with a stellar 9.950 while UNC's Camryn Rueda won on the floor with a 9.925.
Minnesota will now prepare for its final home meet and the Big Ten Championships on March 21 at Illinois.
"We just need a little bit of a refocus going into our final regular season meet and figure out what helps us really perform at our best," Hansen said. "There were a few things we had to overcome in this meet, including late lineup changes and judges conferences. But any time you deal with those types of challenges, it prepares you for other times when those things can happen. We just have to keep battling when there's adversity."
