Illini Surge Past Gophers in Game Two of Series

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to Illinois, 14-6, on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game Big Ten series at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Macy Richardson (3-7) took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (11-21, 4-4 B1G), allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits over 2.1 innings. The Gophers used two additional pitchers in relief, with Kylinn Stangl and Natalie Susa combining to finish the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Illinois jumped out early, plating two runs in the first inning before erupting for eight runs in the second to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
Minnesota answered in the bottom of the first when Tara Wolocko drove in Tinley Easton with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Gophers chipped away in the third inning as Cassie Johnson launched a two-run home run to left center, bringing Minnesota within 10-3.
Minnesota continued to battle in the fourth. Hits from Jae Cosgriff, Brooklyn Jones, and Lucy Hooper loaded the bases before Maggie Werner delivered a three-run double to center, trimming the deficit to 11-6.
Illinois added an unearned run in the fourth and put the game out of reach in the fifth with a three-run frame, highlighted by a two-run home run from Eileen Donahue, extending the lead to 14-6.
