MINNEAPOLIS — Senior Sydney Schwartz tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 2-0 victory over Illinois on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Schwartz (9-8) was dominant in the circle for Minnesota (12-21, 5-4 B1G), allowing five hits while walking none and striking out two over seven innings of work. She faced just 27 batters and worked out of a late jam to secure the win.
Illinois starter Karley Yergler (2-12) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four in a complete-game effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota struck early in the bottom of the first inning when Maggie Werner launched a solo home run to center field, giving the Gophers a 1-0 lead to start the inning.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel from there, with Schwartz keeping the Illini off the scoreboard and Yergler matching her through the middle innings.
The Gophers added an insurance run in the sixth. Tinley Easton reached on a bunt single and later came around to score on an RBI single from Jessa Snippes, extending the lead to 2-0.
Illinois threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on with one out, but Schwartz induced a flyout and a fielder's choice to end the game and secure the shutout.
