Minnesota Closes Nonconference Play With Doubleheader Against Denver, St. Thomas

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team closes out nonconference play this weekend with a doubleheader against Denver and St. Thomas.
The Golden Gophers will host No. 49 Denver (6-4) at 10 a.m. CT Sunday, March 1, before playing St. Thomas (4-3) at 3 p.m. CT at Baseline Tennis Center.
The Season So Far
Minnesota opened the season with two doubleheaders, winning all four matches, including home victories over Iowa State and North Dakota and road wins over Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. The Gophers stayed unbeaten with wins over Wyoming and Colorado State, before falling to Alabama and Colorado. Minnesota responded with a 6-1 victory over Drake but most recently dropped matches to Kansas, 5-2, and Kansas State, 4-0.
Scouting Denver
Minnesota and Denver have met eight times, with the Gophers holding a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series. The Pioneers edged Minnesota 4-3 in the most recent meeting on March 3, 2024. Denver opened the season 5-0 before dropping four of its last five matches. Louise Wikander leads the Pioneers at No. 1 singles with a 17-5 record and has won eight of her past nine matches. Denver also climbed 12 spots in this week's ITA rankings, moving from No. 61 to No. 49.
Scouting St. Thomas
The University of Minnesota holds a 4-0 all-time series lead over St. Thomas, including a 5-2 win in the most recent meeting on Feb. 8, 2025. The Tommies enter at 4-3 overall and have dropped two of their last three matches. St. Thomas is led by freshman Emilia Korseth, who competes at No. 1 singles and doubles and opened the spring season with a key win over Iowa State's Julia Camblor. The Tommies also competed in the 13th annual Gopher Invitational in the fall, going 1-0 in singles and 0-1 in doubles against Minnesota.
Familiar Faces
Before joining Minnesota, head coach Lois Arterberry served as head coach at St. Thomas from 2021 to 2023. She guided the program through its transition from Division III to Division I and led the Tommies to their first Division I victory, defeating conference opponent Western Illinois in March 2022.
Amazing Ante
Junior Jeselle Ante has opened the spring season with an 8-2 mark in singles and a 6-3 record in doubles, leading the team with 17 total singles victories this season. She recently earned a 6-3, 6-1 upset of No. 36 Kyoko Kubo of Kansas on Feb. 20. Ante enters Sunday's doubleheader with 49 career singles wins.
International Day
Minnesota will celebrate international students Sunday with International Day. The current roster represents 12 countries, including Jeselle Ante (United States, Philippines), Nora Knezevic (Croatia), Anali Kocevar (Slovenia), Mia Liepert (Austria), Yinong Ma (China), Sofia Pinto (Portugal), Aiva Schmitz (United States, Germany), Deniz Turan (Turkey) and Arina Valitova (Saint Kitts and Nevis).
