FORT MYERS, FLA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team played the first of their two game series against Northeastern University tonight, taking down the Huskies 12-2 in seven innings at Hammond Stadium in the Lee Health Sports Complex.
Minnesota received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping them put 12 runs on the board on their way to triggering the ten run mercy rule.
Cole Selvig started on the mound and picked up the win for Minnesota, going six innings and striking out five. Joe Sperry also made an impact on the mound for the Gophers, throwing one scoreless inning and two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers opened the scoring in the second inning when Jack Bello sent a two RBI single to left field, scoring Michael Lippe and Charlie Sutherland for the first two runs of the game. Jack Spanier added on to the total with an RBI double, making it 3-0 by the end of the frame.
An RBI single out to center field from David Hamilton drove Ty Allen across home in the bottom of the third, giving the Gophers a 4-0 lead.
Northeastern drove in their only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single and an RBI groundout, pushing the scoreline to 4-2.
Minnesota did not let that go unpunished however with Spanier tallying his second RBI with a single out to left field in the bottom of the fourth.
Sutherland tallied the only home run of the game, sending one over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth, increasing the lead to 6-2.
The Gophers continued to push their advantage in the sixth, scoring four on a pair of RBI singles from Jameson Martin and Weber Neels and a two RBI double from Easton Richter.
Minnesota finished it off in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two on another single from Martin and triggering the ten run mercy rule.
