Minnesota Splits Doubleheader, Falls to Colorado Before Defeating Drake

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team split a doubleheader Sunday, falling to Colorado 4-1 before defeating Drake 6-1 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
 
Minnesota finished the day 6-4 in singles and 2-2 in doubles.
 
Minnesota vs. Colorado
Colorado secured the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 1. Lera Alexin and Rixt Van Der Werff defeated Mia Liepert and Aiva Schmitz 6-1 at No. 2, and Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec followed with a 6-4 win over Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto at No. 1 to clinch the point. The No. 3 doubles match was tied 4-4 and went unfinished. 
 
In singles play, Colorado won three completed matches to secure the team victory. Jeselle Ante earned Minnesota's lone singles win, defeating Rixt Van Der Werff 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Aya El Sayed rallied past Aiva Schmitz 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and Pia Rebec topped Sofia Pinto 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3. Lera Alexin sealed the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Anlin Xie at No. 5. Matches at No. 4 and No. 6 were unfinished.

Minnesota vs. Drake
Minnesota swept the doubles point, winning all two matches against Drake. The Gophers struck first at No. 2, where Yinong Ma and Anlin Xie defeated Jordane Dookie and Elizabete Klavinska, 6-0. Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto followed with a 6-2 victory over Kristina Tai and Maja Dodik at the No. 1 position. 
 
In singles play, Minnesota won five of six matches to earn the team victory. Jeselle Ante put the Gophers ahead with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2. Nora Knezevic followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and Anlin Xie added a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 5. Mia Liepert earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4, and Aiva Schmitz posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Drake's lone point came at No. 3, where Shiori Takeda defeated Sofia Pinto 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.
