Hokenson and Richter Shine in Minnesota's 10-8 Victory over Purdue

MINNEAPOLIS - Junior Kris Hokenson and junior Easton Richter each collected two extra base hits to help power the Minnesota Golden Gophers past the Purdue Boilermakers 10-8 on Sunday.
Junior Joe Sperry (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota (6-7, ). The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out three. Senior Seth Clausen also pitched well, going 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking three and striking out six.
Hokenson's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-5 day, and included two doubles and an RBI. Richter made his contribution with a triple, a home run and three RBI, part of a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Junior Jake Elbeery also contributed for the Golden Gophers, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Minnesota got an RBI single from senior Parker Knoll, scoring junior Drew Berkland from second base.
The Boilermakers expanded their lead to 7-1 before the Golden Gophers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the second. Minnesota scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run triple from Richter, which tightened the Boilermakers lead to 7-4.
Minnesota kept the Boilermakers off the board before narrowing the gap to 7-6 in the third. The Golden Gophers scored two runs when a single from Elbeery scored junior Weber Neels and Hokenson.
Minnesota kept the Boilermakers off the board before taking the lead in the fifth. The Golden Gophers picked up two runs off of Purdue pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Hokenson, bringing the score to 8-7 in favor of Minnesota.
The Golden Gophers held Purdue off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 10-7 the following inning. Minnesota picked up two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of Richter. Purdue put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Golden Gophers still held on for the 10-8 win.
