STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Gopher men's basketball team is back at WIlliams Arena for a three-game homestand starting on Sunday, Dec. 14. Game time is set for noon and will be televised on Big Ten Network as well as through the Gopher Radio Network on KFAN 100.3 FM.
• Minnesota is facing its second Southwestern Athletic Conference this season and is 14-0 against current teams in the SWAC. Minnesota hosted Alcorn State earlier this year and defeated the Braves, 95-50, on Nov. 8. It marks the first time head coach Niko Medved will face Texas Southern in his coaching career.
• Minnesota is looking to rebound after an 85-57 loss at No. 6 Purdue on Wednesday night. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson scored 17 points, followed by Cade Tyson with 15 and Langston Reynolds with 11. Minnesota trailed by just three at the half, but the Boilermakers opened the second half with a 21-9 run en route to the win. Crocker-Johnson finished the game 6-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range. The four treys tied his career-high and the nine three-point attempts were a career-high. Tyson reached double-figures for the 10th time this season. Reynolds reached double-figures for the third straight game.
• Minnesota split the opening two games of Big Ten action when it defeated Indiana on Dec. 3, but fell to Purdue on Wednesday. Of the 18 teams in the Big Ten, 12 have played both their early Big Ten games. Only Purdue and UCLA have won both with seven splitting action (Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, USC, Washington and Wisconsin). Northwestern, Oregon and Rutgers are sitting at 0-2 in league action.
• Cade Tyson continues to shine, averaging 21.1 points, which is tied for third in the Big Ten and 13th nationally. His 211 points this season rank second in the Big Ten and 13th in the nation. His free throws and free throw attempts rank first and second in the B1G, going to the line 93 times and making 73.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
• Texas Southern enters the Minnesota game with a 1-6 record after seeing action against the likes of Gonzaga, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt this season. TSU fell to Samford, 93-90 in overtime earlier this year and earned its first win of the season vs. Biblical Study (Texas), 102-44. Texas Southern was predicted to finish fifth in the SWAC in the annual coaches' preseason poll.
• The Tigers have four averaging double digits this season. Troy Hupstead averages a team-best 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds, as well as the most field goals (33), attempts (68) and three-pointers (9). Zaire Hayes and Duane Posey average 10.2 and 10 points, respectively. Hayes was also selected as a Preseason All-SWAC Second Team selection. Bryce Roberts averages 14.5 points, but played in just two games this season. Jaylen Wysinger has a team-high 12 assists.
• TSU averages 73.7 points, but allows 86.7 this season. The Tigers are shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 33.1 percent beyond the arc. They are averaging 33.9 rebounds.
