Tyson's Career High 38 Points Propels Gophers to 89-53 Win

12/14/2025 2:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson scored a career-high 38 points and tied a school record with eight three-pointers, Jaylen Croker-Johnson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, and Minnesota (6-5) made 15 three-pointers during an 89-53 blowout versus Texas Southern (1-7) at Williams Arena.

The 15 three-pointers for Minnesota ranks fourth in school history, and the Gophers were credited with assists on 27 of their 28 made field goals. Tyson's 38-point outing ties for eighth-most in school history and tops his previous high of 31 points at Samford on Dec. 16, 2023, while playing for Belmont. He finished the game 11-of-19 from the field, including 8-of-12 from long-distance, and 8-of-11 at the free throw line. Tyson becomes the sixth Minnesota player with eight three-pointers in a game, and the first since Payton Willis versus Rutgers on Jan. 22, 2022. Tyson's 38-point game marks the most points for a Minnesota player since Dawson Garcia had 36 points at Ohio State on Dec. 3, 2023.

Isaac Asuma added 13 points, six assists, and six rebounds, Bobby Durkin had 12 points and tied his career-high with four steals, Langston Reynolds dished out a career-high 10 assists, and Grayson Grove had a career-high six points for the Gophers. Minnesota, which continued to play without injured starters Robert Vaihola and guard Chansey Willis Jr. (out for the season), made 28-of-57 (.491) field goals, including 15-of-34 (.441) three-pointers, and 18-of-25 (.720) free throws, and the Gophers finished with advantages of 38-31 in rebounds, 24-7 in points off turnovers, and 21-4 in fastbreak points.

Texas Southern was led by Alex Anderson's 11 points in a reserve role, while Bryce Roberts had 10 points for the Tigers. As a team, TSU made 19-of-53 (.358) field goals, including 3-of-18 (.167) three-pointers, and 12-of-13 (.923) at the line.

Tyson and Asuma hit three-pointers to open the scoring for the Gophers, as they led 6-5 early. Tyson added a free throw and then hit his second three-pointer for a five-point lead, and Minnesota led 10-7 at the first media timeout. Crocker-Johnson hit the fourth three-pointer for the Gophers to stretch the lead to six points with 14:13 left, and Durkin made a pair of free throws to make it 15-9. Leading by four, Tyson scored five-straight, including his third trey of the half to extend Minnesota's advantage to 20-11. Tyson scored 12 of the first 20 points for the Gophers.

Minnesota extended the lead to 31-13 with an 11-0 run that included three-pointers from Crocker-Johnson and Tyson to make the Gophers 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Tyson drained his fifth trey of the half for a 34-15 lead, and a Grove layup kept Minnesota up by 19. Tyson scored on a layup to reach 21 points with 4:52 left in the half, and Kai Shinholster connected on a corner three to make it 41-19. A 6-2 TSU run trimmed the Gophers' lead to 43-25, but Tyson was fouled on a three-point attempt with 0.5 left and he made two-of-three free throws to send the teams to the locker rooms with Minnesota in front, 45-25.

Tyson ended the half with 23 points, making 7-of-11 field goals, including 5-of-7 three-pointers, and 4-of-7 free throws. He's the first Gophers player with 20 or more points in a half since Dawson Garcia scored 27 points in the second half at UCLA on Feb. 18, 2025. Crocker-Johnson had eight points and four rebounds, and Asuma had seven points, five assists, and four boards. As a team, Minnesota made 15-of-29 (.517) first-half field goals, including 9-of-18 three-pointers and 6-of-10 free throws. The Gophers held an 18-13 edge in rebounding, had a 13-0 advantage in points off turnovers and a 10-0 lead in fastbreak points.

The Gophers opened the second half with an 11-2 run, including Tyson's sixth three-pointer, to extend their lead to 56-27 at the first media timeout. Texas Southern answered with an 11-7 stretch to trim the deficit to 63-38 with 11:34 remaining. An 11-4 Gophers run expanded the lead to 32 points with 8:28 left. Tyson made his seventh three-pointer of the afternoon during the run, establishing a new career-high for three-pointers made and tying his previous career-best point total of 31. An Asuma three, his third of the game, stretched Minnesota's lead to 77-42, and Tyson went 4-of-4 at the line to reach a career-high 35 points and put the Gophers up, 83-49. Tyson added his eighth three to tie the school record with 2:41 left.

Minnesota's 27 assists is a season-high, topping the 25 assists (on 30 made field goals) versus Gardner-Webb in the season-opener.

Minnesota continues its three-game homestand by playing host to Campbell next Sunday, Dec. 21. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 5:00 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
