'U' Completes B1G Sweep of Irish Behind 4-1 Victory
11/8/2025 11:30:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Goal and assist performances from Clark, Lamb, Mooney
MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers men's hockey team got multi-point outings from three players, while goaltender Luca Di Pasquo made 33 saves to complete a weekend sweep of Notre Dame, winning 4-1 Saturday night from 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Brody Lamb opened the scoring for Minnesota (4-7-1 overall, 2-2-0 B1G) early in the contest, but it was goals from Luke Mittelstadt and Jimmy Clark 76 seconds apart during the second period that broke a 1-1 tie and helped the home side pick up three points in the Big Ten Conference standings. Lamb, Clark, and LJ Mooney each registered a goal and an assist in the win over the Fighting Irish (3-6-1 overall, 0-4-0 B1G).
The Maroon and Gold wasted no time getting the early edge, just 3:37 into the contest when Clark forced a turnover behind the net and fed Lamb in front for the opening tally. Lamb's quick release beat the Irish goaltender high glove side for a 1-0 Minnesota lead. A Gopher penalty moments later gave Notre Dame its first power play, but the visitors' best chance hit the crossbar, and Di Pasquo stood tall through traffic to preserve the lead heading into the first intermission.
After the Gophers weathered a surge from the Irish to open the second stanza, they started to generate their own offense again. This led to a 2-on-1 with Beckett Hendrickson pushing a pass across the crease to Brodie Ziemer who had his shot stopped by a highlight-reel pad save. Immediately following the brilliant save, Notre Dame found the back of the net for the first time in the series, pulling even 1-1 at the 3:59 mark.
In the middle of the frame, Minnesota went to its first power play as the Irish were called for roughing after the whistle. Lamb found an open Ziemer in the slot, but the sophomore's one-timer rang off the left post, and the opportunity was wiped away. The Gophers went to the penalty box with 7:30 to play in the period and promptly shut down the Notre Dame man advantage.
The final minutes of the second period were all Maroon and Gold as Mittelstadt and Clark scored 1:16 apart to take a 3-1 lead. During the second man advantage of the night, Mittelstadt let go a shot from the blue line and thanks to traffic in front, broke the tie with 3:43 remaining in the second period. Barely a minute later, Javon Moore won a puck battle at the right circle and got a pass over to Clark who wired a wrister to the top corner, giving the Gophers a two-goal cushion at the second intermission.
Special teams dominated the early minutes of the third period as both squads traded penalties with the game taking a more physical edge, but Di Pasquo provided the highlight of the night. The junior scrambled to deny a close-range chance before reaching to recover his stick and kicking out his left pad to keep the Irish from scoring.
Minnesota added an insurance tally with 6:12 remaining in regulation when Tate Pritchard threaded a perfect stretch pass to fellow freshman Mooney, who raced in alone and ripped a shot past the netminder, sealing the 4-1 final.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"This weekend is what the doctor ordered. Give our guys a lot of credit, we had a heck of a week of practice. Hopefully, this is a weekend now where they can gain a little confidence to continue to get better," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "It was Luca's first chance to go two in a row, and I'm sure he feels pretty good about himself, and he should. We needed him tonight; he was outstanding."
