Gophers Drop Opener to Sharks Friday

LIU takes first-ever meeting with 'U'

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's hockey team dropped its nonconference series opener against Long Island, 6-2, Friday night inside 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The Golden Gophers (4-8-1 overall, 2-2-0 B1G) saw their two-game win streak snapped in the first-ever meeting with the Sharks (5-5-0). Brodie Ziemer gave the home side a first-period lead, but it was LIU that scored the next four goals for the road win.

The Maroon and Gold had the early jump and tested the visiting netminder with the night's first seven shots, covering nearly eight minutes. Five minutes into the contest, Brody Lamb patiently waited for a chance at the top of the crease, but his shot was cleared off the goal line by the stick of LIU's diving goaltender, who tallied 36 saves Friday. The pressure led to a Gophers' power play at the 6:51 mark that was erased but momentum stayed with the home side and led to the opening tally.

Ziemer collected his own rebound and pushed the puck to the slot where it ricocheted off a Sharks' defenseman and into the net with 9:39 left in the frame for a 1-0 edge. The margin did not last long as LIU responded two minutes later, scoring the equalizer on the rush, and moved in front by finding the back of the net with 2:01 on the clock for a 2-1 edge at intermission.

The action went up and down the ice to begin the middle stanza until Minnesota went to its second man advantage seven minutes into the period, only to have a penalty of its own end the opportunity early. The Sharks extended their advantage to 3-1 via a shot through traffic on the power play at the 9:41 mark. Less than a minute later, a rebound bid by Beckett Hendrickson hit the right post as the Gophers made a push to get back into the game. LIU weathered the attack and held its two-goal cushion through 40 minutes.

In the early stages of the final frame, Erik Påhlsson found himself alone in front of the net where he shot from close range was gloved aside. The clearance attempt by the Sharks from their own end of the ice ended up in the Gophers' net via an unfortunate bounce. Facing a 4-1 deficit, the Maroon and Gold drew back-to-back man advantages as it searched for any offensive spark. The chances were both wiped away.

Minnesota did not give up down the stretch and pressed the LIU defense where Påhlsson and John Mittelstadt generated quality chances. Eventually with 7:28 left in regulation, Javon Moore tipped home a Tanner Ludtke shot, making it a 4-2 game and bringing energy to the bench. Ziemer and John Whipple kept on the attack, skating in for a 2-on-1 shortly after the Moore tally, where Whipple's shot from his off wing was kicked aside. A penalty on the Gophers with 5:09 remaining negated any final push and the Sharks added two power-play goals in the final four minutes, skating to a 6-2 victory.

Noteworthy
Ziemer used the fortuitous bounce for his fifth goal of the campaign, ranking second on the team, and now has nine points overall ... Moore tallied his second career goal for the Gophers and first since Oct. 10 versus Boston College ... The freshman pushed his point total to four ... Påhlsson increased his point total to five behind his third assist this season ... Hendrickson secured his fifth assist and seventh point of the year as the sophomore continues to find his name on the scoresheet with a point in six of seven series played ... Luke Mittelstadt collected the secondary assist on Moore's goal and has seven points after his sixth helper ... In his first game since Oct. 24, Ludtke recorded his second assist and fourth point of 2025-26 ... Coming off a weekend where he stopped 52-of-53 shots faced and was the B1G Second Star of the Week, Di Pasquo surrendered a career-high six goals and made 16 saves ... After going a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill last weekend in the sweep of Notre Dame, Minnesota allowed the Sharks to go 3-for-4 on the man advantage Friday, while being held 0-for-4 on its own power plays ... Gophers' senior captain Cal Thomas and Ludtke both returned to the lineup following five-game absences via injury/illness.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"They beat us at their game, and you give them credit. They're scripted in how they played and they stuck to their game plan," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We had a good start, and their goalie was outstanding. I mean, we had numerous chances to get in the game, make it a game and keep it going; and he just shut the door on us. And then our penalty killing fell apart."
