Gophers Blank Irish in 3-0 Victory Friday

11/7/2025 11:00:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Di Pasquo stops all 19 to snap four-game skid

MINNEAPOLIS - Luca Di Pasquo's 19-save shutout led the Minnesota men's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Notre Dame inside 3M Arena at Mariucci Friday night. Beckett Hendrickson scored seven minutes into the second period in what proved to be the game winner, snapping the team's four-game losing streak.

Brody Lamb and John Whipple scored empty-net goals in the final three minutes, helping the Golden Gophers (3-7-1 overall, 1-2-0 B1G) earn a home win in the Big Ten Conference series opener against the Fighting Irish (3-5-1 overall, 0-3-0 B1G).

Coming off a tough stretch, the Maroon and Gold came out with jump and set the tone, outshooting the Fighting Irish 15-7 in the opening frame and applied consistent pressure in the offensive zone. Minnesota earned a pair of first-period power plays and nearly capitalized early when a loose puck sat in the crease before being covered by the visiting netminder. Despite controlling play for most of the period, the teams headed to intermission scoreless.

The Gophers finally broke through midway through the second stanza. After an early man advantage was erased, Minnesota capitalized less than two minutes after returning to even strength. Erik Påhlsson corralled a loose puck and circled behind the net before feeding a perfect pass to the tape of Hendrickson, and the sophomore buried a quick shot at 7:04 for a 1-0 lead.

After moving in front, a penalty to the home team had to be killed off and the best chance was from Brodie Ziemer shorthanded, while the successful penalty kill brought the crowd to its feet. The quick glove of Di Pasquo proved clutch in the late stages of the period as he shut down a rebound bid to keep the edge intact through 40 minutes.

Another infraction on Notre Dame carried into the final frame, but it was Di Pasquo that needed to make a clutch stop on an odd-man rush to preserve the margin. The Gophers defense tightened from there, blocking shots and disrupting entries as the Irish managed just six shots in the period.

Notre Dame elected to pull its goalie with more than three minutes left in regulation in a bid to find the equalizer, but the Gophers capitalized instead, scoring twice into an empty net. Lamb chased down a loose puck with 2:48 left on the clock, providing an insurance tally. Thirty-six seconds later, Whipple launched a clearance from below his own goal line that went the length of the ice and into the yawning cage, assisted by Di Pasquo, securing the 3-0 shutout.

Noteworthy
Di Pasquo recorded his third career shutout and first in the Maroon and Gold, facing the lowest shot total allowed by the Gophers this season ... The junior also tallied an assist on the final goal of the night, playing the puck over to Whipple from behind his own net, securing the first point of his NCAA tenure ... Hendrickson put away his second goal of the year, first since opening night, for his first collegiate game winner ... His goal also marked the first time Minnesota has held a lead in a game since its win at North Dakota on Oct. 18 ... Lamb ended a four-game scoring drought with his team-leading fifth goal of the year and is tied for the team's scoring lead behind eight total points ... The senior captain has now scored a goal in five of Minnesota's 11 games this season ... For the first time in his young 40-game career, Whipple found the back of the net and registered his first point of 2025-26 ... Påhlsson collected his second assist of the campaign and now has four points ... Jimmy Clark and Brodie Ziemer picked up helpers on the Lamb tally and now have six and eight points, respectively ... Clark is now the Gophers' leader with six assists, while Ziemer matched Lamb for the overall scoring lead ... Friday marked the 10th all-time shutout when facing Notre Dame and first since Jan. 14, 2023, when Justen Close did not allow a goal ... The last five shutouts versus the Irish have all been by a 3-0 scoreline ... Neither team was able to find a special teams goal with the Gophers going 0-for-4 and the Irish 0-for-1 on the man advantage ... Minnesota freshman Teddy Townsend made his college hockey debut after missing the season's first five weeks with an injury.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"It was a really good hockey game for us tonight," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "I loved our start; it was exactly what we needed. We haven't had good Friday night starts and that was the emphasis. It was one game, but we have to keep building on it and stick to the process right now."
