'U' unbeaten streak stretched to six

MINNEAPOLIS - Goaltender Luca Di Pasquo made 41 saves and the No. 18/17 Minnesota men's hockey team fought No. 1 Wisconsin to a 1-1 tie in Big Ten Conference play from 3M Arena at Mariucci Thursday night, extending its unbeaten streak to six.

The Golden Gophers (3-3-3 overall, 1-0-2 B1G, 4 points) had a first-period lead over the Badgers (6-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 B1G, 7 points) thanks to Mason Moe's power-play tally. Wisconsin answered with the equalizer in the second period and claimed the extra B1G point by winning the shootout following a scoreless overtime session.

Facing the nation's top-ranked team, it was a slow start for the Maroon and Gold, and it relied heavily on Di Pasquo to shut down eight shots in the first five minutes, including a stop during an odd-man rush. A dangerous hit from behind at the 5:50 mark gave Minnesota a five-minute power play and a chance to set the tone early.

After generating chances for the first four minutes, Moe finally broke through and gave the Gophers a 1-0 edge at 9:43 of the frame. Tarin Smith ripped a cross-ice pass to space where Moe jumped into the play and delivered the go-ahead goal over the goalie's glove. Neither team was able to find rhythm offensively late in the first period and ended with the home side in front of its rivals by a goal.

Di Pasquo was sharp to begin the second stanza as the visitors made a push, and the senior was aided by his defense clearing two pucks out of the blue paint. The Badgers' attack eventually found a break at 6:52, pulling even at 1-1 using a pass from behind the goal line. The Gophers remained on their heels as Wisconsin continued to generate pressure and held a 17-5 advantage in shots during the period. Minnesota did get a look in the closing minutes as LJ Mooney fought through traffic before his attempt was blocked and it remained locked, 1-1, through 40 minutes.

The ice was tilted in favor of the Badgers opening the final frame with Di Pasquo again being asked to provide timely saves between the pipes. Using momentum from the senior's play, the Gophers were able to build an attack and nearly jumped back in front when Smith's shot from the point ricocheted off the crossbar in the middle of the period. The last minutes of regulation cleared out without a goal as both sides pushed for chances but settled for the same 1-1 scoreline heading into overtime.

During the extra session, the action went up and down the ice with each team creating opportunities for the winning goal, only to be denied by the opposing netminder and finished even on the scoreboard. The Gophers were stopped on all three shootout attempts, while Wisconsin converted its first shot to claim the second B1G point.

Noteworthy
Di Pasquo made double-digit saves in every period, including 16 in the second period, and finished with 41 stops ... It was the fifth time in the Livonia, Mich., native's career he has at least 40 saves in a contest ... Moe put away his second goal of the year, both of which have been scored on the power play, and ended a five-game goal drought ... Smith collected his second helper as a Gopher and has a point in two of his last three appearances ... Murr stretched his team-leading assist total to five behind his third point on the man advantage this year ... Entering the game with 115 blocked shots, the Maroon and Gold blocked 18 more Thursday, led by six from Murr ... Minnesota has opened the scoring in four of its last five outings, holding a 2-0-2 record in that stretch ... The Gophers have now dropped two-straight shootouts following a stretch of four-consecutive victories, and are now 4-20 all-time in B1G shootouts ... After being held without a power-play goal last weekend versus Penn State, the Gophers converted their first chance Thursday and went 1-for-2 ... Minnesota was limited to one goal for the fourth time this season, and third time in its last four series-opening contests.

Coach Larson's Comments
"Obviously, as you can see, (Wisconsin) owned a lot of the offensive territory and spent a ton of time on our end. I have to give our guys a ton of credit because, boy, we were eating pucks and blocking shots and collapsing and helping Luca around the net in the blue paint," Minnesota head coach Brett Larson said. "Unfortunately, that gave us no energy to go on offense. It turned into a game where we just had to defend and flip it out and change. Thankfully, we got the power-play goal and were able to get a tie out of that, but we're going to have to find a way to defend our neutral zone a lot better."
