The meeting is the second between the Golden Gophers and Jaspers

MINNEAPOLIS - After opening the season with a 91-47 win over North Dakota on Tuesday night, the University of Minnesota women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten)  looks ahead to Manhattan (0-1, 0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) on Friday night. The contest can be streamed live on B1G+ with Marisa Cate and Blythe Whealy and can be heard on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on the call.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Minnesota picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, defeating the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 91-47 at Williams Arena. It marked the fifth consecutive win for the Gophers over North Dakota.
  • Freshman Makena Christian led four Gophers in double figures with 23 points, while Sophie Hart added 16. Transfer Finau Tonga chipped in 14 points, followed by Tori McKinney's 12.
  • Christian's 23-point performance was the most by any Minnesota player making her college debut since 1999, when Lindsay Lieser tallied 23 against Ball State at Maturi Pavilion.
  • Amaya Battle had 10 rebounds, all defensive, and seven assists. The game also marked Battle's 97th consecutive start for Minnesota. Battle is 13 assists away from hitting 500 in her career.
  • Playing the final five minutes, Kennedy Klick posted career highs in points (4), field goals made (2), offensive rebounds (3), assists (2) and steals (2).
  • The Gophers were 35-of-86 from the field Tuesday. It was the first time Minnesota attempted 80 or more field goals since Jan. 3, 2021, when the team took 80 shots at Wisconsin.
  • The win marked the first time the Maroon and Gold made 35 field goals since Feb. 13, 2025, when Minnesota took No. 9 Ohio State to overtime.
  • As a team, Minnesota had 58 rebounds, it's most since Dec. 21, 2023, when the Gophers grabbed 52 against Lindenwood
     
SERIES HISTORY
  • Friday's game is the second meeting between the Gophers and the Jaspers in a series that began in 2012. Minnesota leads the series 1-0.
  • The first, and only, meeting took place in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) semifinal game at Williams Arena. Second seeded Minnesota defeated the eighth seeded Jaspers, 67-54.
  • Trailing, Minnesota used a 19-8 run in the final minutes of the second half to advance to the WBI championship.
  • Katie Loberg led four Gophers in double figures with 18 points, while then-freshman Rachel Banham chipped in 14. Kiara Buford and Micaëlla Riché added 10 points each.
  • Minnesota went on to win the WBI at Williams Arena over Northern Iowa, 88-74. It marked the program's first postseason championship.
     
SCOUTING THE JASPERS
  • The 2025-26 season marks the 10th under Head Coach Heather Vulin's direction. Vulin was a two-sport athlete at Minnesota-Morris, competing in basketball and volleyball. Vulin earned all-conference academic honors in both sports.
  • The Jaspers closed the 2024-25 season with a 16-15 record, their fourth winning record in the last five seasons. Manhattan won four of its last five games to finish the year strong.
  • The Jaspers added 10 newcomers to the roster and welcomed back five returners, including senior Brianna Davis, who was named to the All-MAAC preseason team. 
  • Davis led Manhattan in scoring Monday evening against Rhode Island, posting 18 points.
  • Four Manhattan players hail from different countries: Hana Muhl and Kristina Juric are from Croatia, Rotem Kahlon is from Israel, and Agar Farres Garcia is from Spain.
