The win in Minnesota's second largest margin of victory
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the Manhattan Jaspers (0-2, 0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) on Friday night at Williams Arena in front of 2,904 fans.Â
The Golden Gophers had five players score in double figures, led by Mara Braun, who had 17 points and two steals. Tori McKinney tacked on 16 points and three steals and Sophie Hart helped out with 13 points.
Minnesota pulled down 41 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Manhattan's 28, led by Grace Grocholski's eight boards. The Gophers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 20 second chance points.
The Minnesota defense held Manhattan shooters to just 30 percent from the field, including 0 percent from three-point range. The Jaspers did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored two second chance points while Minnesota pulled down 30 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Minnesota went on a 7-0 run with 7:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Braun, to take a 9-2 lead. The Gophers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 17-10 advantage.
Minnesota built that first quarter lead to 35-20 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:32 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Amaya Battle, to increase its lead to 42-20, a score that would hold until halftime. Minnesota forced seven Manhattan turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
Following intermission, Minnesota continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 65-30 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from McKinney, to expand its lead further to 72-30 with zero seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Minnesota took advantage of seven Manhattan turnovers in the quarter, scoring 12 points off of takeaways.
Minnesota kept widening that lead, expanding it to 80-34 before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Kennedy Klick's three, to grow the lead to 94-34 with 1:19 to go in the contest. The Gophers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 99-36 win. Minnesota fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 27 points.
