Tyson's 30 Points Paces Gophers to 87-60 Season-Opening Win
11/3/2025 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Cade Tyson scored a game-high 30 points, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson recorded his fourth career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Langston Reynolds had 14 points, nine boards, and four assists, as Minnesota routed Gardner-Webb, 87-60, in head coach Niko Medved's debut before an opening-night crowd of 7,669 at Williams Arena.

Minnesota (1-0) took control of the game from the outset, utilizing stifling defense to build a 23-1 lead just over eight minutes into the game. The Gophers led by as many as 35 points in the first half, and led by that same margin three times in the second half before settling for the 27-point victory. The final margin was the largest in a season-opener since a 99-69 win over Green Bay to start the 2020-21 season.

Tyson was 8-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and 10-of-12 at the line. A transfer from North Carolina who started his career at Belmont, it was his 12th career game with 20 or more points and just one point off his career-high. Tyson now has 1,023 career points. Crocker-Johnson's double-double was the fourth of his career, and his first since having 12 points and 11 rebounds versus UT Martin while playing for Little Rock on Feb. 6, 2024. Reynolds came off the bench to go 6-of-8 from the field, and Isaac Asuma finished with eight points and a career-high seven assists in his first career start. Bobby Durkin added seven points and four assists, and Kai Shinholster had seven points in his collegiate debut.

As a team, Minnesota made 30-of-55 (545) field goals, 7-of-21 from three-point range, and 20-of-30 free throws. The Gophers had a 45-31 rebounding advantage, scored 21 points off 14 GWU turnovers, outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 46-24 in the paint, and had 25 assists on its 30 made field goals. GWU, which was held to 33.3 percent (19-of-57), was led by Julius Clark's 13 points, while Spence Sims and Jacob Hudson each scored 12 points. All three players came off the bench for the visitors.

Minnesota opened the game with its fierce defense, building a 10-0 lead before GWU finally made a free throw at the 16:05 mark. Tyson scored eight of Minnesota's first 10 points to reach the career scoring milestone, and the red-hot Gophers continued to build their lead by going on their second 10-0 run to force a GWU timeout up 20-1 with 14:02 left. Six Gophers players had scored at that point, and the team was shooting 7-of-14. The Runnin' Bulldogs missed their first 10 shots and had three turnovers, which led to eight Minnesota points.

Tyson's second three-pointer made it 23-1 before GWU was able to make its first field goal at the 11:17 mark. An 8-3 Gophers run, keyed by a pair of jumpers in the lane by Asuma, gave Minnesota a 31-8 advantage. Minnesota followed with an 8-2 spurt for a 39-10 lead, still with 5:28 left in the half. The Gophers' lead reached as high as 35 points, 53-18, before taking a 53-20 lead to the locker room.

Tyson led all scorers with 17 first-half points, making 5-of-8 field goals, including 2-of-5 from three-point range, and all five of his free throw attempts. Crocker-Johnson had recorded his double-double by the half, with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Asuma had eight points and six assists. As a team, Minnesota shot 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the field and was 9-of-13 (.692) at the line, with a 25-14 rebounding advantage. The Gophers scored 14 points off seven GWU turnovers and had a 32-10 advantage in the paint. Julius Clark came off the bench to lead GWU with six points at the half. Minnesota's defense limited GWU to 6-of-26 (.231) field goals, including 0-of-7 from deep.

GWU started the second half with a 7-4 run to trim Minnesota's lead to 57-27, but Tyson beat the shot clock and knocked down his second trey of the half to push it back to a 33-point lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs countered with a 5-0 run to cut it to 60-32, but Reynolds scored five points during a 10-3 run and the Gophers were back up 35 with 11:35 remaining. Minnesota remained in control of the game during the final 10 minutes, even as GWU knocked down three three-pointers in the final 6:48.

Minnesota remains at home, with an 11:00 a.m. tipoff versus Alcorn State on Saturday, Nov. 8. The game will be streamed via Peacock.
