GAME 1 | Illinois 7, Minnesota 4

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-14, 1-4 B1G) battled in game one, but ultimately came up short, losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini (16-12, 7-1 B1G) by the score of 7-4.

Senior Justin Thorsteinson (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota. The southpaw went 1.2 innings, giving up one run without giving up a hit. Junior Will Semb started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering four runs, three earned, on nine hits, walking none and striking out five.

Offensively, the Gophers were led by junior Jake Perry, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the 'U' pushed one run across in the fourth by trading two outs. Junior Josh Fitzgerald came across to score the lone run of the inning to tie the game.

The Fighting Illini broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the seventh inning. However, the Gophers answered back with Perry's bases-clearing double, which evened the score at 4-4.

Illinois then scored three times over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 7-4 win.

GAME NOTES

» Ike Mezzenga (24) and Jake Perry (11) both extended their double-digit on base streaks.

GAME 2 | Minnesota 8, Illinois 3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Golden Gophers (12-14, 2-4 B1G) salvaged the day and the series with an 8-3 win over the Fighting Illini (16-13, 7-2) in game two.

Junior Connor Wietgrefe (3-2) had another stellar performance on the mound for Minnesota, picking up the win after going 6.2 scoreless innings. The Prior Lake, Minn. native allowed six hits and three walks while striking out two.

The 'U' was led offensively by junior Brady Counsell who went 4-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Jack Spanier had a breakout game at the plate after picking up his first career hit yesterday, going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Gophers got the scoring started right away in the first inning after Counsell singled and sophomore Weber Neels laced an RBI double down the left field line to score him.

The doubles kept coming in the second inning when Hokenson, Jurgella and Spanier all traded places on second to extend the lead. After a Counsell single and a Perry walk, Neels tallied one more run with a sacrifice fly in the inning to make it 4-0 in favor of Minnesota.

Josh Fitzgerald got on the doubles train in the fifth to score Ike Mezzenga and extend the lead even further to 5-0. After scoring two more in the sixth on an Illinois error, Counsell drove in one more run in the seventh to make it 8-0 with two innings to go.

The Fighting Illini tallied three in the eighth inning, but the Gophers coasted to the 8-3 win.
