Minnesota Falls in Series Finale to Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two home runs were not enough to power the Gophers to a win on Sunday as the 'U' fell to Iowa in the series finale, 10-4, on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Connor Wietgrefe (2-2) got the ball to start for Minnesota (11-12, 1-2) and took the loss.
At the plate, the Gophers were paced by Weber Neels, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Junior Ike Mezzenga kept his on-base streak alive with a solo home run of his own on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when Mezzenga stepped to the plate and put Minnesota on the board with a leadoff home run .
The Hawkeyes broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the fifth inning. The Gophers answered with a three-run homer off the bat of Neels, scoring Brady Counsell and Jake Perry, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of Minnesota. However, the Hawkeyes scored eight unanswered runs to take the series.
GAME NOTES
» Wietgrefe struck out seven Hawkeyes in 4.2 innings.
» Mezzenga extended his on-base streak to 22 games.
» Perry collected a hit for the ninth straight game.
UP NEXT
Minnesota is scheduled to host South Dakota State for a midweek matchup on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. The Gophers will return to Siebert next weekend as they host Illinois.
