Perry and Counsell Shine but Minnesota falls to Elon

3/16/2024 4:09:00 PM | Baseball

ELON, N.C. -- Junior Jake Perry collected three extra base hits and junior Brady Counsell added two more, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to the Elon Phoenix 6-5 on Saturday.

Junior Will Semb (1-2) got the ball to start for Minnesota (7-9) and took the loss. Freshman Kyle Remington was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Perry's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-5 day, and included two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Counsell made his contribution with a double, a home run, a walk and an RBI, part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Sophomore Weber Neels also contributed for the Golden Gophers, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Minnesota plated two runs when Perry left the yard with Counsell aboard.

The Phoenix then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Golden Gophers got back on the board in the third. Minnesota picked up a run on Counsell's one-out solo home run off of senior Ben Sieracki, which evened the score at 3-3.

That 3-3 tie turned into a 5-3 Minnesota lead in the fifth. The Golden Gophers picked up two runs off of Elon pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Perry. The Golden Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as Elon scored three times over the remaining four innings to grab the 6-5 win.

GAME NOTES
» Perry led the Golden Gophers, amassing three base knocks in the ballgame.
