MINNEAPOLIS -- Championship season officially kicks off for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers cross country teams this Friday, November 1, when the Maroon and Gold travel to Savoy, Ill., for the 2024 Big Ten Conference Championships. ABOUT BIG TENS
The 2024 Big Ten Cross Country Championships will be held at the Orange and Blue Golf Course in Savoy, Ill. The championships, hosted by the University of Illinois, begin on Friday, Nov. 1 with all 18 Big Ten teams in attendance. This will be the first Big Ten Championships with the four new member schools Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington. All 18 teams will have women's teams in competition and 15 teams will have men's teams running. Outside of the team championships, awards will be handed out to individuals who finish in the top seven (First Team All-Big Ten) and individuals who finish between eighth and 14th (Second Team All-Big Ten).

LAST TIME OUT
The University of Minnesota cross country program raced to 13th-place and 14th-place finishes at the Wisconsin NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Madison, Wis., at the Zimmer Championship Course on October 19. Ali Weimer was Minnesota's top runner, finishing in 11th in the women's 6K, while Emmet Anderson overcame an early team-fall to finish 22nd overall in his 8K competition.

Just weeks after an incredible run at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, Weimer impressively got faster in Madison, clocking a lifetime best 6K time of 19:38.5 to finish 11th overall. In a field that included each of the top five teams in the nation, Weimer finished ahead of the No. 1 runners of the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 teams in the country. Just weeks before the Big Ten Championships Weimer was also the top Big Ten finisher at the event, in a field that had five total teams from the conference. Weimer's time also improves her No. 2 6K time in program history, dropping her personal best time by eight seconds from 19:46.8.

MOVIN' ON UP
After the team's performance at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet last Saturday the Maroon and Gold moved up from No. 25 to No. 22 in the USTFCCCA rankings. Led by junior Ali Weimer, the Gophers have reached their highest team ranking since 2021. Regionally the Minnesota women sit at No. 2 in the Midwest as the postseason begins on Friday in Savoy, Ill.

BIG TEN HISTORY
Minnesota's last Big Ten championship performance came from the women's team at the 2021 Big Ten Championships, capturing the team's first team title since 2008. Megan Hasz won the individual title a year after her sister Bethany Hasz had won for the Gophers. Of that championship roster just two remain on this year's team with Emma Atkinson, who finished 67th overall in 2021, and Brianne Brewster, who finished 69th.

Last season the men took home ninth as a team with Eli Hoeft's time of 25:34.1 being the top finisher, which helped him finish 47th overall. Minnesota's best finish recently at the conference meet came in 2021 where the team finished third overall.

UP NEXT
NCAA championship season lies ahead for the Maroon and Gold, as both the men's and women's teams will head to Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Nov. 15, for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Bradley will play host to the Regional Championship, and will hold both races on the Newman Golf Course with races starting at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.
