ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Gopher Baseball team used another solid start from its ace and a pair of home runs to power past Michigan 6-4 to start a Big Ten Conference series at Ray Fisher Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Michigan (21-7, 2-1 Big Ten) struck for the game's first runs before Minnesota (13-14, 6-1 Big Ten) could collect an out in the bottom of the first when Jesse Franklin lifted a two-run home run. Max Meyer (3-1) settled in from there, sending his Gophers back to the plate down by just two. Easton Bertrand had the quick answer, leading off the top of the second with a home run of his own, the first surrendered by the Wolverines' Tommy Henry (6-2) this season.
Kozicky added to the lead himself, following up back-to-back walks by Meyer and Bertrand with his own bomb, launching a three-run home run in the top of the fifth. Henry worked 6.1 innings for Michigan, surrendering six earned runs after allowing just four on the season entering the game. He struck out eight Gophers while walking four and allowing six hits. Meyer ousted his mound opponent with a double in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the sixth, Michigan took advantage of a lead-off walk to score a run on an infield hit and trim the lead to 6-3. Meyer ended the inning with a strikeout to escape further damage and finished his day with 7.0 innings, striking out five while allowing two earned on seven hits.
Brett Schulze took over on the mound from there, working a spotless bottom of the eighth. The Wolverines strung together two hits and a walk in the ninth to cut the lead by one, but Schulze ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts for his fourth save of the season.

Bertrand and Kozicky remain Minnesota's team leaders with five home runs each this season … Meyer has worked at least 6.0 innings in each of his five starts this season … Schulze allowed his first run in his last 9.2 innings in the ninth and has allowed just a pair of runs in his last 12 appearances totalling 17.2 innings.

The two starters continued to duel in the early innings before Minnesota loaded up the bases in the top of the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Zack Raabe's chopper up the first base line did not leave the infield, but it was enough to reach safely and bring home Bertrand for the game-tying run. Jack Wassel then lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Jordan Kozicky to give the Gophers a 3-2 lead.Take a look at the top plays from @GopherBaseball's 6-4 victory over Michigan on Friday. pic.twitter.com/IOEGzvdTef
