BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Gopher Baseball team proved that three can be greater than four, using a pair of triples to earned a 7-3 victory over No. 23 Indiana on Friday night despite surrendering a pair of home runs to the Hoosiers at Kaufman Field.
A triple by Easton Bertrand to score two in the fifth and another by Drew Hmielewski that cleared the bases in the eighth provided the majority of the Minnesota (18-20, 8-5 Big Ten) offense as they opened the series with their sixth-consecutive win over No. 23 Indiana (28-14, 9-4 Big Ten).
Max Meyer (4-3) let up a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but cruised the rest of the way, collecting 12 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. The Gophers tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Hmielewski scored Cole McDevitt on an RBI groundout, but the Hoosiers regained the lead with an RBI groundout of their own in the fourth.
Reliever Nick Lackney surrendered a lead-off home run in the eighth, but struck out two in 1.1 innings before turning the ball over to Brett Schulze, who ended the ninth with a strikeout as he finished the final two outs of the game.

The victory marked Minnesota's first against a ranked team this season (1-2) … Wassel reached base four times on the day, walking twice to go with a pair of singles … the Gophers 4-5-6-7 hitters each had a pair of hits on the day … Hmielewski's four RBI marked a career high.
