Gophers Drop Pitchers' Duel at Target Field, 2-1

4/20/2019 7:13:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Pitching continued to dominate for the Gopher Baseball team in game two of the team's non-conference series with Oklahoma on Saturday, but the Sooners scraped together a 2-1 win at Target Field to even the series.

Easton Bertrand lifted his sixth home run of the season to score the only run of the day for Minnesota (17-19), while the bullpens dominated for both teams, not allowing a single hit on either side of the ledger.

Oklahoma (26-14) scratched an unearned run onto the board in the top of the third on a bases loaded walk against Gophers ace Max Meyer (3-3). Minnesota had left the bases loaded in the first inning and ran out of a potential scoring chance bunting into a double play in the second. Meyer worked in and out of trouble in the game, as the Sooners stranded six base runners through his 5.2 innings pitched. The right-hander struck out just two batters while allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits.

His mound opponent Nathan Wiles (6-2) kept Minnesota quiet through the game's first four innings. Oklahoma hit two doubles in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 2-0, but Easton Bertrand's homer leading off the bottom of the inning pulled the Gophers within one. Wiles worked 6.1 innings for the Sooners, surrendering just one run on the home run while holding Minnesota to just  three hits on the day. Jack Wassel's seventh inning double spelled the end of the day for the right-hander, but three Oklahoma relievers held the Gophers quiet the rest of the way.

Nick Lackney worked 3.1 hitless innings for Minnesota, striking out one Sooner batter, to keep Minnesota's hopes alive. Jason Ruffcorn shut the Maroon & Gold down for the final 1.2 innings to earn his ninth save of the season.

NOTABLE
Minnesota is now 10-10 all-time at Target Field … Eli Wilson extended his hitting streak to seven games. He now owns two of the three longest hitting streaks for the Gophers this season.

UP NEXT
The rubber match will conclude the series on Sunday morning at Siebert Field. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
