Massey's First Start Begins Masterful Night for 'U'

4/16/2019 9:22:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – A strong combined pitching performance and steady offensive production pushed the Gopher Baseball team to a 5-1 victory over South Dakota State on Tuesday night at Siebert Field.

Cole McDevitt continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a double in the game; Jordan Kozicky lifted his seventh home run of the season for Minnesota (16-18); and rookie J.P. Massey impressed in his first collegiate start.

The Jackrabbits struck first with a solo home run by catcher Ryan Mc Donald leading off the second. Massey allowed four walks in the first two innings but pitched out of trouble, finishing with 4+ innings on the day, striking out four while allowing just the one hit.

Korey Kuhlmann worked the first 3.0 innings for South Dakota State (16-15), scattering five Gopher hits while striking out four to escape any damage. Minnesota took advantage as the Jackrabbits turned to their bullpen in the fourth. Jack Wassel led off the inning with a single, coming around to score the game-tying run on a ground out. Three-straight Gophers reached base leading off the fifth against Brady Stover (1-3) and each came around to score, getting some help from a passed ball and a wild pitch in the inning to plate the final two and take a 4-1 lead. Kozicky's home run tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.

Jeff Fasching (1-0) came on in relief of Massey in the fifth, working 3.0 shutout innings, and allowing just one SDSU hit while striking out four Jackrabbits. Nolan Burchill threw a shutout eighth inning, and Bubba Horton closed out the ninth for Minnesota.

NOTABLE
Massey's 4.0 innings were a career high, as were his five strikeouts … Fasching moved to 4-0 in his career … McDevitt, Andrew Wilhite, and Eli Wilson now lead Minnesota with a five-game hitting streak … Kozicky has reached base in 10-straight games.
