Gophers Win 3-2 at Seattle

3/11/2019 4:10:00 PM | Baseball

Cole McDevitt drove in two runs, including the winning one.

The University of Minnesota (3-11) baseball team concluded its road trip with a 3-2 win at Seattle on Monday. Cole McDevitt was 3-for-5 with two RBI singles. He drove in Zack Raabe twice, including the winning run in the ninth.

The Golden Gophers tallied six hits to the Redhawks' five. Minnesota led 2-1 for a few innings before Seattle (4-11) tied it in the sixth. It remained 2-2 until McDevitt's RBI hit in the ninth.

Brett Schulze (2-0) was credited with the win as he recorded the last out of the eighth. Nick Lackney picked up his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Seattle took an early 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded grounder in the first, but Minnesota went ahead a few innings later. After the first, starter Sam Thoreson settled in for his longest outing of the season, allowing four hits, one run and three walks, and striking out five in five innings.

A McDevitt single and walks for Max Meyer and Easton Bertrand loaded the bases in the third, and Riley Smith was hit by pitch with two outs to bring in McDevitt for the tie. In the fourth, Zack Raabe hit a single and stole second. Cole McDevitt singled to left to drive in Raabe and make it 2-1.

The Redhawks tied the game in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of Jake Stevenson walks. They tied the game on a Jake Taylor RBI double. Stevenson, Jeff Fasching and Schulze combined for a scoreless and hitless seventh and eighth with one walk.

Between strikeouts in the ninth, Seattle's sidearm right-hander, Alden Huschle, hit Raabe with a pitch. Raabe stole second during the second strikeout. This allowed him to score on McDevitt's hit to left field and put Minnesota ahead for good.

The Gophers will return to the West Coast for a weekend series at Long Beach State starting on Friday. After three games against the Dirtbags, Minnesota will go to Pepperdine for a matchup on Tuesday, March 19.

Minnesota Notes
