Gophers Score Early, Cruise to 7-2 B1G Win

MINNEAPOLIS – Gopher Hockey scored on its first two shots on goal of the game and three of its first four as Minnesota ran away with a 7-2 win over Michigan State on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Twelve Gophers tallied points in the conference victory while six players recorded multi-point games for the Maroon & Gold. Brent Gates Jr. (three assists), Ben Brinkman (three assists) and Sammy Walker (one goal, two assists) led the way for Minnesota while Brannon McManus and Tyler Sheehy notched two goals each.
Minnesota (4-5-1 overall, 2-1-0-0 Big Ten) jumped out to a two-goal lead with a pair of tallies within 25 seconds as Rem Pitlick scored at 3:17 on the Gophers first shot on goal of the night and Sheehy lit the lamp on the next shot at 3:42.
McManus pushed Minnesota's lead to three at 9:06 of the opening stanza before Michigan State (4-7-0, 0-3-0-0) found the net seven seconds later with a goal from Mitchell Lewandowski.
The Big Ten foes replicated the four-goal showing in the second period as Minnesota jumped out to a 6-2 lead with Sheehy's second of the night at 0:54, Walker's goal at 7:12 and Clayton Phillips' first collegiate goal at 18:05. Patrick Khodorenko tallied at 10:04 of the second period for the Spartans.
Following eight even-strength goals to start the game, McManus added his second of the night with the game's lone power-play goal at 11:38 of the third period.
Mat Robson made 22 saves to pick up the win for the Gophers, moving to 3-3-1 on the year. John Lethemon took the loss for Michigan State, making 16 saves in a relief appearance. Drew DeRidder started the night in goal for the Spartans, coming off after the opening two goals by Minnesota and returning for the third period. He finished the game with six saves.
Minnesota, which outshot the Spartans 29-24, was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 1-for-4 on the power play.
